Limerick or Ennis

by whitepac

I have just booked some cheap flights for me and my wife for her birthday to shannon airport for 2 nights and was wondering where was best to stay. Ennis or Limerick or even shannon. We would like something to explore during the day and we would like somewhere with some nice restuarants and we like a drink so lots of pubs too. Any info would be great.
Thanks

Limerick is not one of the prettiest of Irish cities, so I would look for somewhere else. I have been to Ennis but can't for the life of me remember what it was like. I do remember however, that Gort was quite an interesting town. I had lunch there one day and it was a typical Irish Town with the mandatory number of pubs. You will find many great towns in the area, but Limerick is definitely not one of them.

I would definitely choose Ennis. Since it is a special occassion, check either Old Ground Hotel, http://www.flynnhotels.com/Old_Ground_Hotel/, or Temple Gate Hotel, http://www.templegatehotel.com/.

From Ennnis, you can travel to the Cliffs of Moher, up into the Burren, take the Loop head drive and even make it into Galway.

Ennis has some great pubs. Since both hotels are in the heart of Ennis, you will be in walking distance. Simply ask at the front desk. They should be able to tell you where the local trad seissuns are being held on those two nights. If they cannot tell you, then a stop at Custy's Traditional Music store will get you on the right track.

Have a great time!

If you are looking to save some money on hotels you could check out: http://www.dghotels.com They have some good room only rates. I think their cheapest hotel is in Limerick city, towards the suburbs. Some rooms are at €39 per night but of course it dpends on your dates.

They also have a hotel in Galway, again not in the city centre. Galway is the nicest city in Ireland for a weekend away. Limerick is ok. Cork is also another good option. Ennis is a smaller town, I have never stayed or gone out there, might be ok. Closest to Shannon airport.

Enjoy your trip.

Ennis is a buzzing little town, good for socialising and as the previous poster said, a good base for West Clare (lovely). Galway is about 1/5hrs drive away, also a good place to consider. I actually like Limerick, it's not very picturesque but great shopping! You could also try the little towns/villages of Ennistymon, Ballyvaughan, Kinvara (lovely little harbour village). Enjoy

The center of Ennis is a lot of fun. No shortage of pubs and restaurants. I love it there.

Orion's suggestion of Kinvara is great. It is a wonderful little village right on Galway Bay. If ever I was to move to Ireland to live, Kinvara would be the place I'd choose. Even if you don't stay there, at least drive through. You will be charmed.

Travel Tips for Limerick

The University of Limerick - Ollscoil Luimnigh

by Kristina1701

UL, located in Castletroy, is a relatively new university and is supposed to be one of the best in the country; if not even THE best.
It is not too big and thus it is easy to find your way around. It is a really beautiful campus with lots of green.
Throughout the year UL is offering English language courses. I took one last summer and enjoyed it a lot. I regret not having stayed for a longer period. The English language classes usually start in the morning and end in the early afternoon. Every day one could sign up for "after class activities" such as: pub nights, going to the movies, Irish dancing, ... etc. meeting sooo many new people from all over the world at UL. In this way lots of greetings to: Virtu, Helena, Yvonne, Ana, Carlos, Peter Horan, Michael, Luciano and all the others!

Saturday afternoon 5pm.

The main tourist areas O'Connel Street and King's Island start to close down.
After 6pm rien ne va plus.

In the pub you usally have the choice between Guiness and Beamish (No Murph, No Bulmers).

Don't wait at a red pedestrian crossing. The locals don't do it.

Spiritual Home of Irish Rugby

by ciaus

Limerick is known as the spiritual home of Irish Rugby and if you are in Limerick between September and April you should visit Thomand Park and catch a Munster Rugby game. Munster which is the provincial team representing the counties of Limerick, Cork, Kerry, Clare, Waterford and Tipperary and this team is the current European Rugby champions (2006).
Tickets for the European cup games are hard to come by but tickets for Celtic league games can be got more easily. Either way if you have the chance you should go and watch a game and savour the atmosphere. Irish weather being Irish weather /7 with most games played in the winter you should wear a woolly hat, a waterproof and warm jacket and gloves and also bring money for your hot whiskey's :-)

The people's park

by irishjon25

The People's Park is situated across the road from Colbert train station. The have recently installed a very nice playground for young kids. This playground is very safe and enjoyable for kids.

A nice place to walk your dog (provided it's on a lead) and nice place to relax and enjoy a nice summer afternoon.

There are four structures in total in the People's Park, a bandstand, a drinking fountain and two shelters. To-date the council have completely cleaned down the drinking fountain and have revealed the original ornate detail on the columns. Cast iron replicas of missing original features will be provided in phase 2. Work is well advanced in restoring one of the shelters (now completed). This was completely derelict and very soon it will be reinstated back to its former splendour of Victorian time.

Pay a visit to the Park on a summer or autumn afternoon. You wont regret it.

The Cliffs of Moher

by globetrott

The Cliffs of Moher - not OFF but IN the beaten path...

Take a walk on top of the cliffs. This is also a place to hear some nice Music performed by local artists - more pics in my travelogue !
