Yeats Statue
by Goner
Besides being a good base to tour the surrounding area it's a nice walkable city. If you stay in a hotel near Stephen Street you can walk to transportation, the Abbey, the Mall and the Tourist office located on Temple Street and The Lungy. The Yeats statue is located on Stephen Street (where it turns into Low Knox St) and Markievicz Road (is that an Irish name?).
The post office is down Low Knox Street less than a block away. from the statue.
Just pick up a map at the Tourist Office. They have traditional entertainment which is hard to find in other cities. I found the locals fun and friendly.
A Primeval Experience
by kathycollins
As you approach the Cairn you traverse an area of pine woods. It seems a fitting surrounding for the ancient burial grounds. Was it just my imagination or did these trees lend a sense of tranquil protection and watchfulness to the cairn?
Glencar waterfall
by kathycollins
Glencar waterfall is well signposted - you can't miss it! After our little walk around Deer Park, my friends were not ready to trek to another site so they waited for me to walk to the waterfall. Unlike our previous walk, this one was a very short jaunt on handicapped accessible walkways. This is an easy site to see, and quite beautiful - the inspration for Yeats' poem The Stolen Child.
Irish gaelic language
by HORSCHECK
Ireland has a strong gaelic culture. To promote the irish gaelic language, most roadsigns are bilingual: english and irish gaelic. The irish gaelic language is usually known just as irish. The photo shows the bilingual sign of Sligo Station.
Pete McCarthy - McCarthy´s Bar
by HORSCHECK
The book * Mc Carthy´s Bar * written by Pete McCarthy is a fine travel book for an Ireland trip. Pete McCarthy was born Irish but has spent most of his life in England. He therefore decides to do a tour from Cork to Donegal. On that trip he discovers that despite many changes since his childhood, the charm of the Irish people has still remained.
The book is not a tourist guide but it gives you a fair view of Ireland and its people.
