Toast

by LouShapiro

I have been purchasing Waterford crystals for many years. I read a beautiful toast that you had printed in a box of your crystals .It was so appropriate for so many occasions. Please help me find a copy of this toast . Thank You , Lou Shapiro

RE: Toast

When you enter a question on this site, you are addressing a community of travellers, not a crystal manufacturer in Ireland! So when you say "you had printed in a box of your crystals", this should be in an e-mail to Waterford! But I would guess the toast you have in mind would be one of these:

May misfortune follow you the rest of your life, but never catch up.

A toast to your coffin.
May it be made of 100 year old oak.
And may we plant the tree together, tomorrow.

May the Good Lord take a liking to you... but not too soon!

May those who love us love us.
And those that don’t love us,
May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn’t turn their hearts,
May he turn their ankles,
So we’ll know them by their limping.

May you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live.

May your right hand always be stretched out in friendship, and never in want.

May the roof above us never fall in, and may the friends gathered below it never fall out.

May the grass grow long on the road to hell for want of use.

May your glass be ever full.
May the roof over your head be always strong.
And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you’re dead.

Travel Tips for Waterford

Local college

There is a 3rd level Institute of Technology here, very popular with Irish students. They also take Erasmus exchange students as well, so if you get the opportunity to study in Waterford for the semester/year, take it! :)

Sunset at Saleens Beach

by SabrinaSummerville

Saleens beach is beautiful, remote, and almost deserted. It's also the most beautiful seaside place in Waterford to watch the sun set.

It's hard to find this beach, and even many of the locals won't know how to get there. head out the road from Waterford City, take a left at the exit for Dunmore, you will pass a tiny country pub on the left and the turn for Saleens is on the right about a mile past that pub.

Although I have lived here for much of my life, I only discovered this place last year. You drive down a very narrow country road - the kind with grass growing up the middle - until you get to a fairly generous parking area.

There's a long, narrow, shingly beach and if you walk to the end you will meet up with mellow anglers whiling the day away, waiting patiently for a tug on the line.

I strolled along watching the sun set behind a little island. It was magical. As I turned and looked at the brush on the bank behind the beach, I saw the setting sun turn it to burnished gold.

It would be an ideal place for a romantic January sunset proposal of marriage, or more practically a great place for a quiet summer picnic.

The pics I'm going to post hardly do the place justice.

There are no shops, no pubs, no stalls or hurdy gurdys - just genuine seaside peace and quiet.

The town of Ardmore is nearer...

by kathycollins

The town of Ardmore is nearer to Cork than Waterford, but it is in Co. Waterford. It is a lovely little town that is a popular seaside resort in the summer. It features a lovely ruins of St Declan's church and oratory. There's a beautiful 12th century round tower, and this wall of the 13th century church may have been part of an earlier church. The carvings of biblical scenes are remarkable.

Something for Everyone

by SabrinaSummerville about Fitzpatricks

Fitzpatricks is the name given to the restaurant which now occupies the building formerly housing O'Grady's restaurant. There are those who would be delighted at the business changing hands, but I was a great O'Grady's fan and the new owners had a lot to live up to.

The building itself is the lodge of an ancient hospital (which in itself has been converted to apartments) and is a very beautiful building. The new owners gutted it and totally revamped it inside, while retaining all of the wonderful period charm of the exterior. The result inside is a warm and welcoming eatery set out in rooms of different sizes. The decor is modern and in colours of browns, creams and splashes of burgundy to add colour.

In my opinion the restaurant aims itself at the family market, tourists, and occasion diners. You can book out the whole place for a party or reception.

The menu is international and hearty fare. It includes all the usual staples such as chicken, seafood pie, steaks, crispy duck etc. Each evening there is a selection of seafood special dishes displayed on the blackboard.

Prices vary very much depending on what you order. There are early bird and special offer menus at Euro50 and Euro60 for two people for three courses including a bottle of wine. My experience is that if you order a la carte you pay this amount for one person without wine for what is relatively the same fare.

I find this place to be a bit hit and miss, which is a real pity as I know the owners and the staff of old and they do try very hard. When the food is only occasionally great I think one can only point towards the chef. If your meal is freshly cooked it is fantastic, but on occasion certain dishes taste as if they have been defrosted pre-prepared meals. In good restaurants these days you are entitled to expect everything to be cooked from scratch for you. I don't have a favourite dish here, but I will use this spot to commend the staff, who are without a doubt the most friendly, helpful, and accomodating staff of any restaurant in the City. Special words here for Ken and kevin - marvellous work lads.
