Mullingar offers its visitors a wide range of recreational and sporting activities, including golf, tennis, greyhound racing, equestrian activities and angling.

Due to its proximity to the superb lakes of the midlands, Mullingar is considered an anglers paradise. The four major lakes in the vicinity are: Lough Ennell, Lough Owel, Lough Derravaragh and Lough Lene. In addition to being ideal locations for anglers, most are suitable for water sports, with windsurfing and sub-aqua facilities available. Sailing is also very popular, with boats available for hire. There are also a number of smaller lakes situated within 10km of the town, which have excellent course and trout fishing.

If you're a golfer who likes to stroll in the footsteps of the biggest names in your sport then Mullingar Golf Club cannot be ignored Mullingar’s’ 18 hole championship course, situated near Lough Ennell is one of the most popular inland courses in the country, it hosts the annual Internationally renowned scratch cup.Every year, it hosts one of the top competitions for amateur golfers in the country - the Mullingar Scratch Cup.

if you're not an angler, a walker or a golfer, there's plenty more to choose from. Mullingar has a vast choice of sports and activities to cater for all tastes.

Whether your interest in Gaelic games is as a spectator or a player - you could start at Cusack Park -the home of Westmeath GAA. The county football team have made great strides in the last few years and the thrill of summer football and a good championship run fills the town with a real feeling of excitement.The local rugby and soccer clubs are also very active and provide facilities for players of all levels
