Opera Festival
by caseyd4
By far and away the best time to visit wexford is the Oper Festival, Held from the last week of October till the end of the second in November. The festival not only boasts one of the biggest Opera Festival gatherings in Europe, but also in recent years the beginning of the Fringe Festival which runs alongside it. The three weeks are a complete experience from visiting the multi-tude of Art Gallerys as every space available is turned into an exhbition for the talented locals, to historic tours. The Opera's begin after the openning cermonny, Held on the Wexford Quay a magnificent show staged by the beautifully renovated quay. The Fringe festival offers entertainment from day time street performances, to the amazing "Swinging & Singing" Pubs Competition . The Swinging and Singing pubs competition has been running nearly as long as the origanal festival itself, as its origins arrive from the Opera performers going to the Local and having a sing song after. Now with over 50 pubs competting for Best Act, Best Comedy and Best Overall performance the Competition is furious.. And when you have three pubs a night trying their hardest to ensure they are the best in wexford (maybe in Ireland) the CRAIC IS MIGHTY !!!
Sunsets

Brilliant sunsets most evenings over Bannow Bay. I can just walk down from my sisters house to the beach and sit and wait for this fabulous sunset. A sunset is always special no matter where in the world you are.
Monuments
by Dabs
We came across a couple of statues as we were traveling through Wexford. The first statue we saw was near the site of the former bull ring, it commemorates the "gallant men of Wexford who fought for Ireland's freedom in 1798" according to a nearby plaque. I assume this refers to the men who fought in the Wexford Rebellion, an Irish rebellion against the English domination of Ireland, part of the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
The second statue can be found near Crescent Quay and is of Commodore John Barry (1745-1803) who came to be known as the father of the American Navy. Although born in County Wexford, Ireland, he moved to Philadelphia when he was 15 and rose to prominence as a sea captain in the American Revolutionary War (also known as the War of Independence), fought from 1775-1783 that originated as a war between Great Britain and the thirteen former British colonies which are now part of the United States.
Smirting & The Smoking Ban
by orlikins
Smirting is a combination of the words smoking + flirting, geddit? It started when people had to go out for a ciggie after the ban was enforced, and got chatting to fellow smokers outside on the street, eyes meeting across a cloud of blue nicotine... ;) So you may just meet a local hottie in this way!!
REMEMBER - Since March 2004, you CANNOT smoke inside bars, cafes or restaurants, or anywhere where people are working (e.g. taxis, offices etc.)
The legislation is officially known as the Public Health (Tobacco) Act, see link to it below for a summary.
You may smoke in outside in the street or in designated smoking areas, but never inside a place where people are working (includes offices, bars, restaurants, shops, shopping centres, taxis, etc)
