Our US family recently found some relatives from Chieti and plan to meet and visit with them this summer. After touring Rome we'd like to go over to Chieti but don't want to drive. What is the fastest, safest, and most guaranteed way to travel from Rome to Chieti? Any specifics on who to call about this would be helpful. Also, what are some recommended hotels or Bed and Breakfasts to stay in the center of town in Chieti that are clean and convenient and won't require a car?

I can't help you with the hotel but there are trains leaving from Roma Tiburtina or Termini to Pescara and it stops at Chieti on the way. Depending which train you're going, it lasts between 3h30 and almost 5h. Funnily enough, there's only 4 or 5 trains a day... not that much but the ride is a beauty as you cross the Appenines. It's still pretty wild and rugged area of Italy,. I did this train ride several times and it's a beauty. The ticket should be something like 11 Euros.

The train ride is surely scenic but takes long time. If you're in a hurry consider going by bus. It's a 2,5 hours trip, surely less scenic than the train ride.

if you look at trenitalia.com they have an english option and if gives full timetabel and costs. It takes between 3.20 hours and 5.30 hours depending on time of day etc. Cost is 11-12 euros each way. It isn't a bad drive, just one road and is quite nice. It takes me a little under two hours to drive (fast) from our house in Caramanico Terme to Rome.

Every year on Good Friday, which is the Friday before Easter, a procession is held through the torch-lined streets of the old town. The participants wear masks and are dressed in the colours of their parish. Only men and children may take part. The procession also shows the symbols of the various stations of the cross (lance, rooster, cross, etc.) and is accompanied by an amazing choir. It is the most important procession of its kind in the Abruzzo region.
