From Frankfurt, Germany to L'Aquila in Abruzzo

by stellamia

I hope I can get some answers on this "challenging" plan I have: Next spring my parents (in their 60's) would like to go by car from Frankfurt/Main in Germany to L'Aquila in the Abruzzi, Italy.
I recommended to them to make two stops on this stretch. Who can tell me, what the first stop in Italy after the Brennero could be? A nice hotel (double room about 100 Euro), things to do the next day, then the second hotel around Ferrara, for example, with another stay, things do do or see until they start to get to their final destination L'Aquila. They love italian original food, their wines, the culture.
I'm excited to read your tips!
Regards, stellamaria

Possible drives over the Brennero could be:

Frankfurt - München - Bolzano - Trento - Bologna - Cesena - Sansepolcro - Perugia/Assisi - Spoleto - L'Aquila
or
Frankfurt - München - Verona - Bologna -San Marino -Urbino - Ascoli Piceno - L'Aquila

Alternatively they could drive through Switzerland (but not pass Munich to visit you).
Frankfurt - Basel - Luzern - Gotthard - Lago di Como - Milano - Parma - Bologna - Firenze - Orvieto - Roma - L'Aquila

As for accomodation, in spring I would think they have the choice. Anything from Bed&Breakfast to Agriturismo to hotels will have availabilities.

Bolzano and Trento are both very nice small cities with minimal traffic hassle and no shortage of food and accommodation.
In Bolzano the primary language is German---though they will speak Italian if you ask--- and the architecture is Germanic. There's a lovely small cathedral, some nice walks, and the possbility of short excursions into the mountains. Trento is just across the the cultural border and purely Italian. It has a fine castle that's now a museum and many attractively frescoed walls and a gondola to carry you across the valley to the mountains on the other side.

In Ferrara it's worth taking a good look at the Romanesque cathedral, touring the castle, and visiting the Casa dei Diamanti, a renaissance palazzo now housing an art museum. The Casa is in a rather haunted symmetrical neighborhood representing a very early attempt at planned development and an odd place to stroll.
