Hi Mark,
You will not be disappointed!! Abruzzo is very beautiful, lots to see and do especially if you like walking. You will not be disappointed with the food either it is wonderful!
I am veggie too and it is very easy to eat vegetarian in Italy there are so many pasta dishes with just vegetables as well as soup, pizza and of course lots of freshly grown vegetables. Hope you have a brilliant time.

Located in the high valley of Sangro (1167 meters), this village is the most important center of the National Park of Abruzzo and it is where the headquarters are found. The Natural Science and Folklore Museum and a zoo with typical animals of the park are within the grounds of the headquarters. It is also the birthplace of the great philosopher, Benedetto Croce.
This scene is typical - steps up to arched doorways, balconies with flowers and washing hanging out. In August these homes become shops and it must be so much busier then -- but I much prefer it like this.
It seemed to us that the villagers of Pescassseroli liked their dogs but did not often take them for a walk. Well there was no need for them to! Several times when we were hiking a dog would accompany us at the start and even show us the way if we were unsure of the direction!!
This St Bernard cross breed accompanied us one for the whole of a 5 hour walk and was truly a faithful guide - pity he didn't have any brandy though :-)
He was a wimp though when he saw the dogs guarding the cows in the fields - he came and stood behind Dave when they barked at him!
The hike to the Sanctuary was accompanied by our faithful guide - see local customs tip! The local women brought stones up this path to build this sanctuary as thanks to the Madonna for protection during the war. During the war a gun had been placed up here for attacks and if the villages made trouble or aided the resistance then the gun would have been turned on them.
From our hotel road juction we carrried on down to the roundabout onto the main road. Then turned right, look for a sign for the sanctuary marking the start of the road. This road soon turns to a gravel path, past some stables -don't be surprised if a dog joins you for the walk here!
We carried on following the red spots, crossing the road a couple more times and into a zig-zagging path up through the trees - this was rather steep in places but only lasted for about 20 -30 mins. As we reached the crest of the ridge we came to a plateau and there was the sanctuary on our left - a welcome sight indeed!
