A Tragic Tale of Pescasseroli's name

Cesido Gentile, a poet shepherd tells the tragic story of how Pescasseroli got its name:
A young crusader knight Serol met the beautiful Pesca in Palestina, falls in love and marries her. He sent his bride to Castel Mancino to stay with his father the Count Maracino, lord of the castle. The father however became besotted with Pesca, and during her escape from his clutches she drowned herself in a well. Eventually Serolo returned from the crusade (an unusual feat in itself) and learning of his wife's gory death he died of grief. To atone for his sins the old count builds the town called Pescasseroli by the union of Pesca and Serolo.

The newer town

The newer part of town - across the main square toward the river is more residential.
The roads are wider but still has washing hanging out by the roadside! Guess they don't have much traffic. On Wednesday mornings these streets are taken over by the weekly market - we had a brief glimpse before going on a hiking trip - the usual italian goods were available, clothes, shoes and leather bags etc...

Fill Up Your Rucksack

You will need a decent rucksack if you intend to do much walking here and preferably one with air flow at the back as it can get hot.

Make sure you have plastic bags also to put any maps and valuables in just in case you get caught in a down pour. Even in a rucksack things can get very damp Decent boots are a must.
As you are in the mountains, the weather changes a lot.
It may be hot and sunny for the first couple of hours of your walk then rain very heavily for the rest of the day. Pack some decent waterproofs!
If you do forget anything though, there is a decent little shop in the town which I found reasonably priced Put a bit of loo roll in your rucksack - just in case! Camera/camcorder with plenty of memory cards/film/tape! You will need a decent map (the one for sale at Ecoturs is good) and a compas as you can't rely on following just the red markings alone as they can be few and far between or (worse) lead you along the wrong path! I am putting together a web site with details of lots of walks - I will post the URL when it is complete!

Soon you reach the Park entrance for zone C and two water troughs in a clearing are passed - take the opportunity to refill any water bottles here.
Here the path forks left onto a gravelly track - signed C3. This is the path to take, which leads past the Rifugio della Difesa (not open).

This is a beautiful spot - a perfect place for an alfresco lunch. We did not meet another soul during the hike until we reached here when we met a couple on their honeymoon - who probably didn't want to see us!
