Old town streets I

Wandering around the old town's cobblled streets and admiring the quaint rustic architecture - the arched doorways and balconies overspilling with colourful flowers.
This road is at the beginning of the Churches road.

Women in Black

The Local dress may look as if the local women are in mourning, but thre is a little story to this. The old costumes of Pescasseroli were quite grand and colourful, however back in 1846 whilst going to Ischia for thermal treatments the women became the objects of unwanted attention in Naples. They sought refuge in the neighbouring island of Procida were they exchanged costumes with the local women there. When they returned the costumes were liked so much that they adopted the black ones.

A whole gamut of hiking trails are available
The area is divided into regions - using a letter code - and then the trails in that region are given a number. So for example you could be walking route B2. Times are not marked on route but are usually displayed on a hiking informaton board at the beginning of the coded region. Pescassseroli has ABCD areas around it

This pic shows the info board at the beginning of Region C where the lovely hike to the Santuario di Monte Tranquillo starts. The next few tips in this section will describe this hike.

Thank goodness for the meadow - make sure you have good hiking shoes for that stony path! Follow the track across the meadow, when the path bends to the left and look out for the red markings going up ahead tothe beech forest.

Here you may see a stone with A C3 marking and the end of D4 path - this could be taken on the return journey back to Pescasseroli.

Up to the Castel Mancino

In this section I'd like to take you on a virtual journey up to the evocative ruins of Castel Mancino with their great views over Pescasseroli.....

To reach the ruins stand as if coming out of the town hall - the Municipio - in the town centre turn left and half left again towards the Pensione al Castello. Take the road between the pensione and the Ufficio del Zona. The old town centre is on your right as you walk up the road. Turn right at a T-junction - it shoud be signed for the Castel anyway. - and then onto the Via Castel - very appropriate - on your left.
