Hotel Sassi

Location is about all

The selling point for this hotel is its location. We looked at all the other hotels in the Sassi and none beat this for views and setting. This is what you are paying for as you get very little extra for your money.

We had the one Suite the hotel offers which consisted off an extrance shared with another room off the alley above reception, a lounge and bedroom and, on a lower level a bathroom with shower and a huge private terrace. The furniture was basic to say the least, the settee in the lounge was so uncomfortable you couldn`t use it and the decor was tired. There was no air conditioning, just two pedestal fans. The insect guard on the lounge window was broken, and the one on the bedroom wouldn`t go up! Our room was not as cave-like as some others we had seen illustrated.

Breakfast was a great disapointment. Croissants, bread and biscuits. No cheeses or cold meats. Tea and coffee, of course, and packet orange juice, but very basic indeed.

The mini bar in the room was also basic and pricey and whilst the receptionist would get you a drink if asked there was no bar as such as what may once have been the bar is now the breakfast room. The hotel has no restaurant (in my book this makes it a B&B, not a hotel) and we found it difficult to find a good selection of restuarants nearby, though it was August and several were closed.

Our main complaint, though, is lack of attention to detail. The map showing the location of the hotel is abysmal. It really is difficult to find and it was a surprise to us that there is no vehicular access to it at all. It is situated half way up the cliff and the only way to it is by a maze of cobbled steep stairways.

There is no parking, though the hotel has an arrangement at 15 euros a night with a local garage.

Unique Quality: Location with fantastically atmospheric views of the Sassi.
