This is what you find written in some street signals there show the way to visit some particular sites in the town.Rari turisti means that in that place you should not find many tourists you should not find lines, nor groups.This is the first time in my life that I see a tourist information dividing touristic places from a kind of off the beaten path ones, and, I can say I really did not find anyone in the sites marked as: rari turisti.Genial!
The wind blow on the the bare hill.Silence.The breath come from the past.Once a creature kept breathing,it seems we are the continous of that puff.Then the hystory came as the action went on and the thought melted with the weird beyond the stars into struggle."I just wanted to film the poetry written into The gospel according to Matthew",and that's what Pier Paolo Pasolini did.Following the tracks of the italian director,poet and...well following the tracks of humanity itself it is possible to arrive between the rocks of one of the most acient city of the world.Declared Unesco Heritage site,I just discovered that the Mel Gibson's "the Passion" it's been filmed here,but this is a less interesting story.
Back to the silence,to the wind on the top of the bare hill,to see the city on the opposite side and...an eagle screaming down in the "gravina" (ravine,sort of carsic valley)...and the sky mirrors the thinking of a dark man.
The Gospel according to Metthew it's only one of the many movies filmed in Matera because of the incredible location.It's a very important lecture of the occidental thought made by a marxist intellectaul.Dry,full of static portraits and showing Jesus in a human original and complex point of view...I mean,it's not an easy film,but it is a masterpiece.
