B&B San Biagio Sassi: Great view small space
They give you almost what they promise: the buildings stands on the edge of one of the "Sassi", has a beautiful view over the Sasso Barisano, the Old Town (Civita) and the Cathedral. The best moment to enjoy the view is at sunset.
There are two apartments, the lower one with no vista but a sort of dehors and the upper one, with the scenic terrace.
The upper apartment has a balcony and a terrace with a great view, but it's on three levels (the third one being the terrace) connected by a spiral staircase so better to avoid if you have small children or have any kind of impaired mobility.
We lived in the upper apartment and found it comfortable even if small: two persons and a newborn are more than enough!
You can find car parking in the streets nearby or at a watched garage few minutes walk away. The "Sassi" are just under your feet while the modern city centre is close by.
What they don't tell you is that this is not a B&B but rather a self catering accomodation: the owner gives you the key, gets money and disappears until the moment of your departure. There is a fully equipped kitchen and they also give you coffee, snacks and milk for breakfast..
Well, it's OK, I prepare my own breakfast every day at home, but could be fair to know it in advance.
Unique Quality: Great view from the terrace and the balcony of the upper apartment.

Sextantio Grotte della Civita': Back to the Caves
Service: excellent, all needs catered for, and much more flexible than some larger hotels. For example, we have arrived at 1pm and official check-in time is 3pm. But early check-in for our suite was no problem! And neither was checking out a couple of hours later when we were leaving
Food: local specialities, fresh fruit, cakes, and the amazing bread of Matera for breakfast - and all local. Jam was one of the best we have tried. Alcoholic drinks were also available (not that we went for those at 9am :) )
A piece of advice:
If you arrive early enough, ask the front desk to show you around several rooms if they are ready but not yet occupied - each is unique!
A note:
While the hotel is amazing, it would not be an ideal choice for anyone with mobility problems as there are lots of stone staircases and uneven floors.
Unique Quality: Decor: this was simply amazing, with each room and suite being a restored cavern. Stone, organic fabrics and wood have been combined for a minimalist decor, together with the amazing white bathtub by the window. Picture is from hotel's official website, but that was actually our suite
Atmosphere: the proprietors wanted to make the hotel as authentic as possible, so no broadband, no TV in your room, and... limited number of lamps. This meant that, by the end of our 3-day stay, we were much more skilled with the candles and matches than ever before. While this might not be the most convenient (no switch at your bedside to turn those lights off!) but it's part of what makes the hotel unique. The hotel also feels like a small village, given that it's a collection of buildings rather than a single inn
Location: 10 minutes walk to both Sassi Barisano and Sassi Caveoso, and only a stone staircase away from being in the back yard of the Cathedral

B&B Capriotti: A house in the stone
This is not the typical bed and breakfast, infact you practically have your own small house with an indipendent entry, a kitchen a bedroom and a bathroom. Not the typican B&B also because they just put in your house milk, coffe, marmelade, croissants, chocolate butter and some other food to have breakfast, you you have no breakfast time, it's totally on your own.The location is perfect as it is in the centra Duomo square just next to the entrance of Sasso Barisano and the view outside your door is really breathtaking.I really had a great time in this place.Price is 70 euro for 2 people or 50 if you are alone.
Unique Quality: You really sleep in the sassi.
