London, UK to Reggio di Calabria

by agnes111

Bonjourno everyone!

I live in England near London and would like to travel to Reggio di Calabria some time next year. Could anyone please tell me which are the best airports to use to get there.

Grazie!

I have not found a direct flight from London - it seems you would have to fly from Heathrow via Milan -

Hope this is of some help.

By air Berling you can travel to Lamezia Terme which is in Calabria, 130 km North of RC by the main road A3, E45.

The same airline also fly to Catania in Sicily, 115 km to RC.

There must be some bus connections to RC at least directly from Lamezia, since RC is regional capital, which would make sense.
We travelled by road, though.

For the flight see Air Berlin site:

You will almost certainly need to use the train from whichever airport you land at. Italy has an extensive network, and trains are safe, comfortable and very reasonably-priced.

You can find train times, details and fares in English here:

http://trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html

You do not need to book tickets online in advance. Ticket machines are easy to use and mostly (perhaps always?) have English language options.

You could perhaps fly to Palermo on Sicily, or you could also consider Naples. Reggio di Calabria does have its own airport, but I am pretty sure you will have to change planes from the UK. Look at www.skyscanner.net for carriers and (usually) fares for your route and dates(both direct and indirect). You may well find it is best to take an indirect flight, or break your journey overnight somewhere (e.g. if you land in Naples).

Calabria is an ideal place for adventurers. Here you find art treasures and villages whose older homes barely have electricity and running water. Architectural masterpieces have been eroded by the earthquakes that occur approximately every hundred years.
Calabria means rugged mountains, crystal clear seas and olive trees as well as ancient ruins, forgotten by time. It also means delicious fish, vegetables, cheese, sausage, salami, wild mushrooms, olives and figs.
Calabrian roads are very brutal. Generally narrow and full of pot holes or blocked by huge rocks. There are just a few excellent roads.
However, to explore Calabria you should be there by car. Only larger towns have rail stations and they are hard to find!
In Calabria you should know a bit Italian. People are very friendly but don't speak any foreign language.
