tropea vs taormina for language school

by jasminedew19

Hi
I'm currently trying to decide between spending 2 weeks in either Tropea or in Taormina to take some Italian courses. I will be travelling solo and am in my late 20s. Would anyone who has been to both places be able to offer an opinion on how the two locations are different and what kind of experience I'd have in one over the other? Would one be more fun? (night-life, things to do, energy in the town, friendliness of the locals, where do more young people tend to go to travel, etc.)

Thanks very much!
Jasmine

Have not been to Tropea but would still like to comment. Taormina is likely to be the most expensive of the two BUT also the one with spectacular views of a smoking volcano!

Thanks - it wrote itself as that's how lovely it is there :) But I wouldn't mind Tropea either. I'm sure it's nice.

I have been to Taormina many times and spent a week in Tropea at the Porto Pirgos Hotel. The town of Tropea is quaint and not loaded with tourists except in August as it is a favorite of the Italians

Taormina is beautiful and very busy with tourists so it is your choice. We loved both areas but Tropea is much quieter than Taormina and much smaller--

thanks! taormina is where i've decided to go, with maybe a couple of days in tropea after the language course is done.

Travel Tips for Tropea

Red Onion Festival

by isolina_it

Every year, in the first week in July, at Tropea is the Red Onion Festival (Sagra della Cipolla Rossa). The event, that attracts a great crowd of visitors, celebrates the queen of Tropea cookery, famous for its organoleptic qualities and for its sweet, delicate taste. Numerous specialities prepared with the onion are offered for tasting during the festival: fried, roasted, boiled, in fish soup, as a dressing for pasta, in salad, and together with other vegetables. The festival also provides for stands to be set up for those local firms that scrupulously use traditional methods of preparation and old country recipes, to exhibit their produce. On these stands can be found small red sweet and sour onions, pickled onions, "confetture" and the patés. The event aimed at disseminating the appreciation of this extraordinary product from the Tropea district, the festival finishes with games and a music concert.
