Travel Tips for Atrani
Streets of Atrani
We enjoyed walking down to Atrani from Scala where we were staying, down the old stepped path - pics and info on my Scala page if you are interested.
As we reached the top of the town we were met by many whitewashed paths meandering everywhere - which all eventually lead down to the small square of Piazza Umberto I.
Walking over to Amalfi you will discover that that the streets and alleyways of Atrani have maintained their medieval structure with flowers and lamps decorating the narrow alleys and adding splashes of colour to the peeling pastel walls of the storied houses.

"Atrani is a perfect stop for the Amalfi Coast"
Atrani is situated right on the water. It is a 5 minute walk to neighboring Amalfi. Atrani is nice and quiet and keeps all the charm that the Amalfi Coast has to offer. We have visited here for 3 years straight and stay at Hostel Scalinatella located right on the water. The brothers, Filippo and Gabrielle and acccomodating. You cannot beat the prices no matter where you go. Atrani is situated right below Ravello, the posh resort town and right next to Amalfi. The bus drops you off right in Atrani which was very convenient though the walk to the Amalfi bus stop is easy and a perfect panoramic walk along the water.
"Main road in Atrani"
This road leads from the piazza and to the entrance to Scalinatella.
The place offered free breakfast in the morning every day. The cornetto was the best I have ever had in Italy and the cappuccino was perfect. The main piazza is located right outside the doors of Scalinatella and has a barber, 2 bars/cafes and a couple of restaurants. With the close proximity of Ravello and Amalfi. Atrani is the perfect place to stay the night(s) and I'd reccommend Hostel Scalinatella. The place is huge and can accomodate many people. Atrani is not "touristy" like Amalfi which contributes to its charm. It is still a peaceful little town.
Here is a nice picture of the sea from the nice beach.
Scalinatella also has rooms for rent in nearby Amalfi on a lemon farm overlooking the beautiful Amalfi Coast. You cannot beat the view.
You can walk up to Ravello or take the bus. The nice thing is that the steps leading up to Ravello are right in the main piazza. Scalinatella is the only hostel/hotel that I am aware of that is in Atrani and it is perfect for students who want to come to the coast. When I studied abroad in Firenze, I came down here at least three times and have visited twice again for vacation.
Atrani, the twin town of Amalfi, often overlooked for its bigger more famous neighbour.
Less touristic than Amalfi its quieter and more relaxed, a great place to unwind in its little piazza. It is also reputed to be the smallest village in Italy - so you just have to add it to your list of must see places.
Atrani is situated at the base of the narrow Valley of Dragone with its mountain villages. Scala is one of those villages and where we were staying. A 40 - 50 minute walk saw us descend into Atrani to meander around its quaint streets and Piazza Umberto and admire its churches before going onto to Amalfi. a most delightful diversion for an hour or so.
