Visit Goleto Abby
I have already built a page about it at its proper location, but since it's a bit far away from everything, I think it's better to copy and paste the info here as well, and add some more pics.
"An old Monastery, founded in the XII century by Saint Gugliemo on his way to the Holy Land. Initially it was a monastery for nuns, and close to it there was a smaller monastery for monks who took care of the economic assistance of the nuns. The nuns inhabited the monastery until 1515, when the building was abandoned and only few monks remained there.
In 1807, Giuseppe Bonaparte king of Naples, suppressed the abby and the whole complex remained empty and abandoned until 1973. In this long period every valuable object was stolen.
The most impressive artifacts in the area are:
Torre Febronia, built in 1152 in romanic style for defensive purposes.
Lower Chapel, built around 1200 in romanic style
Upper Church, built in 1255 in Gothic Style, that's the real masterpiece of the complex.
Big Church, built in 1745, is heavily damaged by lack of care and by the many earthquakes that hit the land. There is no roof."
To get there from Avellino, follow the SS "Ofantina" in direction Montella-Lioni. After about 40 kms, exit "Area Industriale". Follow the sign "Sant' angelo dei Lombardi", exit "Goleto".
