 | Hotel Mamela: A breath of fresh air!

This hotel was part of a package we'd purchased and one of the highlights of trip. We were supposed to have had a standard room with just a window and no view of the water. I don't know if our travel agent worked some magic or we just got lucky but we ended up front-and-center with a small, walk-out balcony overlooking both the pool and the sea! Our room was airy, spacious, very clean and had a large bathroom - everything done up in cheerful blue-and-yellow tile. After a nice but tiny, stuffy room in Rome, we were positively giddy. The Mamela has an elevator, nice pool, breakfast room, bar, lounge, lovely terrace (take your breakfast outside!) and all of the rooms have a safe, mini bar/fridge, air conditioning, hairdryer and satellite TV. It's an old building - the hallways were a tad musty when we were there and some of the furnishings were a little worn - but very nicely kept. I read that it recently underwent some updating so any insignificant imperfections were probably remedied. The staff was friendly and attentive, particularly with a faulty fuse-box issue our first evening. Breakfast, which is included in the room price, is mostly pastries, cereal, yogurt and great coffee with a couple of hot items available for an additional fee. Hotels on Capri are expensive - no way around it - and this one runs 210 - 400 euro for 3 price-tiers (standard, sea view, deluxe) of rooms. In the summer, you'll be paying top dollar but it's very possible you can swing a nice discount in the fall as I see a lot of the hotels run specials for the later season. Do spring for a seaside room, if you can - the view is terrific and captures more of the feel of the island. I've no idea why we didn't get a shot of the water from our balcony - duh! IMPORTANT - anyone staying on Capri should pre-arrange with their hotel for luggage delivery from marina to hotel!! Many of them are beyond the Piazzetta and accessible only on foot. Most hotels will pick you up at the marina, by taxi, and transport you as far as Piazzetta but won't handle your luggage beyond that point. Without porter service you'll be dragging your suitcase some considerable distance through heavy crowds and hilly, possibly uneven terrain. Pay the small fee - it's worth it. Hotel Mamela is about a 5-minute walk from the Piazzetta, which is a bonus as it's very quiet at night!
Terrific views (from seaside rooms), far enough from Piazzetta to be quiet, friendly staff, very clean, wonderful breakfast/lounge/pool terrace Theme: HotelPrice: US$180 and up » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Via Campo Di Teste 8, Capri, NA, 80073, ITPhone: 39-081-837-5255Directions: Reference website (click "English" on right side of the main page, under the photo)Website: http://www.hotelmamela.com Other Contact: info@hotelmamela.com

 | Villa Brunella: Warm B&B with a Spectacular View

Me at the Hotel Pool by TRimer In Capri town, its most beautiful residential street is Via Tragara, which leads up to the Faraglioni, giant rock sentinels jutting from the sea. That's where you'll find the hotel Villa Brunella, and its restaurant, Terrazza Brunella, an unbeatable combination of elegant decor, polished service and the warm welcome only a family-owned restaurant can offer.
The staff is so nice. When we almost got stuck on the island due to a sudden rain storm, they took care of us, got us to the hydrofoil to Sorrento and offered to put us up for another night without a reservation. The staff at the pool gave us wonderful restaurant recommendations too. One thing to note is that when we stayed here it was very reasonable ($120-$180 US/night). Now with the bad exchange rate, it is quite pricey. | Hotel Belsito: A Room with A Priceless View

half of view from our room by claudeintexas For those thinking staying in Capri is too expensive, here's a budget hotel with a view. We've been staying at the Belsito for a number of years and each year gets better! Just make sure and ask for a room upstairs at the front of the building facing the "street." The hotel is a good walk from the popular piazetta, the "living room of the world" with its incredible people-watching. But this 10 minute walk, uphill all the way, takes you away from any noise and dreaded tourists who all depart the island in the early afternoon. It is on the way to the Villa Jovis and not far from the Faraliogni, the spectacular rock formations off Capri.
Each room has a semi-private balcony overlooking all of Capri. Sunsets and sunrises are beyond belief. Accommodations are not deluxe but who cares? There's nothing like buying some cheese and crackers and wine and sitting on your own balcony. There's a tiny "supermarket" nearby for the booze and snacks. Also the food is delicious at the Belsito. (After 20 years of touring Capri, I've only had two or so bad meals anywhere there!) Don't be fooled by the one-star rating - this a smart, clean and functional family-run hotel, overlooking the St. Giacoma monastery. It's also close the Piazzetta but just far enough out of the way to be shielded from the day-tripper rabble.
Friendly, warm and accommodating service. Theme: HotelPrice: US$80-120 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Via D.Birago, 5Directions: From Piazza Umberto follow the street towards the S. Giacomo monastery and Via Krupp.

Loved this B&B, highly recommended...
Stayed in Monte Solaro for two nights. A family run B&B that has the most personalised service we have came across. Constanzo fetched us from the Anacapri town to his B&B. On the same evening, he saved us from the unexpected thunderstorm. Room is big and clean so is the bathroom. Even though the B&B may be a little difficult to reach but my husband and I enjoyed the daily workout up to Constanzo's B&B. Continental breakfast is served, would prefer to have eggs to go along. Nevertheless, we still enjoy our stay in Monte Solaro B&B. There are only four rooms so booked early. More reviews on the B&B here

Capri is very un-friendly to backpackers, so if anyone asks where you're staying on the island, lie and name a hotel. If you do want sheltered accomodations, there is a quaint bed-and-breakfast off the road from Anacapri to Marina Piccola (can't remember the name, but you'll see signs). The further you get from Anacapri (the top of the island) the less expensive and less crowded it will get.
There is a "campground" in the woods off the road down to the Blue Grotto. It offers a great view of the Napoli skyline, but don't let the locals know you're there. Theme: CampgroundAddress: CapriDirections: Take the advice of friendly locals, or just look for B & B signs in your wanderings around the island.
