I was surprised to learn that Ischia is the largest island in the bay of Naples. I think like most people, I assumed that Capri would hold that title. Even more surprising when you get there (By ferry from Sorrento or Naples) is that it has a totally different feel to Capri. The outwardly brash ostentaciousness of Capri is replaced by a quiet and reserved self-confidence, similar to that displace in a truly beautiful woman.
The island is famed for its thermal spas, many in use since Roman times. After a drive around the island the differences between Ischia and Capri will become more apparent. Possibly due to its size, it seems much less tourist infiltrated, although hotels are plentiful and much cheaper than you would expect. Where as much of Capri strikes me as ‘new money’ Ischia retains the more dignified charms and appeals of gentrified ‘old money’.
