hiring a guide at Pompeii

by Ellybe

Does anyone know if you can hire a guide at Pompeii.
Thanks

There are certified (licensed?) guides waiting (lurking?) by the ticket area. We had a guide as part of a tour who was pretty good, but there were plenty you could hire for group or individual tours - at least that is what I remember from several years ago..... Karl

Yes you can hire a guide. But I didn't. I just got the map of the site and the audio guide.

I like reading a good historic novel before making a trip like that - I really enjoyed "Pompeii" by Robert Harris - really gives you a sense of being there.

Cold in Napoli?

by FinElina

Take luggage with wheels, it's much easier to pull it than carry it around as the traffic is what it is in Naples... :) It's not always that warm in Naples! I visited the city in early November and when I left from Rome it was almost +20 degrees but when I arrived to Naples (the same day) it was only +8 degrees! You can imagine I was freezing in my summery clothes :)
Even though it was sunny in Naples, the cold wind made the weather feel freezing without gloves, scarf and a warm jacket...
So, take some warm clothes with you also in autumn! Don't forget your camera, there are many things to photograph in Naples!

An Italian arrangement

by CliffClaven

Not so much getting there as getting away. When the time came for old Cliffie to think about leaving Naples, he started thinking about a car to haul everything away. In those long ago days there were strict currency exchange rules, which meant that finding dollars to buy a tax-free car for export was a tricky business. But old Cliffie, more Italian than the Italians, came to an 'arrangement' with a friend at a bank. Old Cliffie got his little red car and his friend was eased through a difficult exam.

Even a short visit to Naples...

by bgedwards

Even a short visit to Naples should include: visit
Isle of Capri (reached by hydrofoil from Naples or Positano); visit nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum; drive the Amalfi Coast...stop at all the small towns (don't miss Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello); visit the Greek ruins at Paestum [99 KM south]; Naples Archeological Museum. I would highly recommend the Michelin Green guide to Italy and the Michelin Red Guide to Hotels and Restaurants in Italy! Take time to eat at a small pizzeria and have an espresso at one of the coffee bars (both are local institutions!). There are discos and, for those who like opera, the San Carlo Opera House (one of the oldest and finest in Europe)...tickets are sometime difficult to obtain and would probably only be available to someone visiting from a foreign country through a travel agency far in advance.

Statue in Palazzo Reale

by extrajoce

This statue faces the visitor when he comes into the Palazzo Reale. The classic Roman style, the lighting and the water, give it an amazing charm, as do the location in a cove and the beautiful Italian colour of the wall. It is this type of attention to detail and style that really impress me and maintain Naples' grandeur.
