Spaccanapoli - Obelisk of San Domenico
by yooperprof
This stately obelisk stands proudly in the Piazza opposite the Spanish-looking Church of San Domenico. The Neapolitans have been very fond of erecting this kind of monument, usually to offers thanksgiving for deliverance from one of the many kinds of misfortune that regularly afflicts their community. (You can pick from earthquakes, volcanos, wars, famine or plague.) The occasion for this pillar was a terrible pestilence that hit Naples in 1656. The figure at the top is St. Gennaro, patron protector of the city.
(In Italian, this is the "Guglia di San Domenico" - but do note that is Gennaro and not Domenico who presides over the square.)
(N.B. Personal note: my Italian grandfather, born in the Abruzzi hill-town of Roccaraso, was baptised "Domenico.")
Neapolitan knick-knacks
by yooperprof about Antiques on Spaccanapoli
For those with the budget and the inclination, there are several antique/junque shops along Spaccanapoli that offer some fascinating relics of history. I enjoyed just window-shopping to see what parts of history were for sale. But you probably don't want to buy anything here unless you have a sound knowledge of Italian and a willingness to haggle.

Museo Archeologico - Part 4 - Erotic Artifacts
by suhadis
It's a small room on the mid level of the museum, that's themed erotic. It's a interesting way to see how the ancient Romans express eroticism. Bronze figurines, a few statues and mosaics are displayed in the room. The entrance to the room seems to be guarded, but maybe for checks on age. It looks like it's not opened all the time cos the door to the room comes with a lock on it. When I was there there was a group visiting the room and touring the room.
Apollo Temple on Averno Lake
by egicom05
The Apollo Temple is located on the oriental bank of Averno Lake. It was a great thermal station, partly sunk for the bradyseism; it preserves only four great arc windows which supported an arcade, today completely lost.
The structure is unfit for use but is possible to observe it only from the outside.
Returned back and taken the road that coasts along the lake, one meets later, around 300mt, the brief path that brings to the entry of the Pseudo-cave of the Sibilla.
