Need advice on where to stay around Naples/Amalfi

by Shafali

Hi Travellers,

My friend and I are flying into Naples on July 1 and are isolating our 2 week holiday to only the South of Italy and hopefully Sicily too. We want to rent an apartment in small town that is still central to trips to Sorrento, Positano, Pompeii, and all those touristy sites. But we still want a genuine, charming experience and to be able to live amongst the locals.

Does anyone know of any towns which we should look into, or have any information, which could help me find out more? I would really appreciate it. This is our first trip to Italy and a very special occasion.

Thanks in advance!

S.

The above user is well-known in the Italy forum for breaking the site's rules and advertising an apartment in Salerno, which is NOT a nice town and is NOT close to the tourist attractions like Capri, Pompeii, Positano, etc. Don't be swayed by his "suggestion". Only go to Salerno if you're looking to holiday in a poor industrial port city.

On the Amalfi coast, check out Priano midway between Positano and Amalfi - I have not stopped there myself but it has gotten some nice opinions on this site. East of Amalfi, several Australians I was in touch stayed in Maiori about a year? or so ago and check that town for pages. It is a little less convenient but may also be less expensive and surely less overrun. Both these villages are centered right on the main coastal road.

Travel Tips for Naples

Spaccanapoli - San Domenico Maggiore

by yooperprof

This church was originally commissioned in the late 13th century by Charles of Anjou, King of Naples and Sicily from 1266 to 1285 and founder of the Angevin line of kings. It became the seat of the Dominican Order here, and was closely associated with the founding of the Dominican-based University of Naples. Elements of the original medieval "Gothic" can still be found here, overlaid by layers of Renaissance and Baroque construction and re-construction over the centuries. For example, the exterior of the church was largely completed under the influence of Spanish design, which is appropriate as it was constructed in the late 15th century when Naples was ruled by the Aragonese.

San Domenico is like other Neapolitan churches in that it contains so much notably art and design elements that the first-time visitor is likely to be overwhelmed and not know where to start looking. I was most interested in the number Renaissance and Early Modern tombs and funerary monuments, but there are also numerous paintings to consider.

Interesting too is the fact that St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the greatest scholastic philosophers of the Middle Ages, studied and prayed here. One of the chapels is dedicated to Aquinas and features relics associated with him.

CLOTHES

Since it was September, it was already SALDI time so every shopp we went into was either crowded or had nothing else to offer anymore! Oh yes! It's unbeliveable how quickly things are sold out... All the normal sizes are gone in a nick of a time... So you have to try not to get to upset!

Trattoria dell'Oca * At...

Trattoria dell'Oca * At lunchtimes, the trattoria is full of regulars who come for the tasty traditional dishes. In the evenings, a more refined selection of Neapolitan and other Mediterranean dishes (which vary according to the season) is on offer. Prices are higher in the evenings, though still quite reasonable. the house speciality , a chocolate souffle, has to be ordered at the start of the meal. May I suggest the house special! :)

Catch of the Day!

Right off of Via Caracciolo there is a beach area, the only beach area I saw for it is mostly rocks. Anyway, the fishermen show off their morning catch. Various seafood from octopus to sea urchins can be found.

What caught my attention, was the guy with the knife and the octopus (photo 4). Apparently the octopus was making his last stand vigorously fighting for its life. I could see the fisherman struggling with it as it bite his hand. He then took his knife out and the battle was over.

Sea activites in the south of Naples

by suhadis

On a Sunday there in Naples, I discovered that the locals still like to head out to the seaside, even though there wasn't a sandy beach in sight there. At the seaside near Piazza Vittoria, along via Caracciolo, there is a shallow area along the rocky coastline. Seems to be quite a family event here at the weekends. I was en route to Castel D'ovo when I discovered many people get of at Piazza Vittoria (this is right at the south of the city for bus No. 152). Many were also tanning themselves on the large flat boulders..
