help needed accomodation summer 2009 in Neapoli region
by masha_zinger
Dear friends,
I'm in a serious lack of help, please, share all your experience, which I would appreciate highly! And anytime you need mine, I'm all yours! :)
The thing is that we (two young couples and a single friend of ours) are coming to Italy on the 28th of june and are staying untill the 12th of july. We're looking for an unexpensive way to spend our holidays by the sea...But as we've never been to Italy we don't know what to start our search with and where to look for rental suggestions. We are looking for an accomodation in Neapol region by the sea side, where the house or an appartment or nice bungalo even would cost 1000 euro per two weeks per whole maximum (for the perioud of our staying)...might be a fisherman's village or a small town..whatever...We personally are more interested in a small kinda ethnic fisherman's house near the sea, than an appartment in a new built cottage. We are not that much concerned about the condition, you know..it should just be nice and romantic :)...Could you, please, be so kind to tell us where we should look for such an accomodation? Do you think we could find something nice (pretty near to the sea) by 1000 euro max in the perioud? Where (what web sites) can we look for such rental suggestions? Thank you in advance for any kind of information!!!Yours forever, Masha from Russia :)

This websaite might be worth a try. The prices seem to fit your budget and the location and size seem ideal.

Travel Tips for Naples
Lungomare - seafront stroll
by filip007
A great way to spend the late afternoon or the evening, is to go from Piazza del Plebiscito (the square of the Royal Palace) to the sea and then by via N. Sauro and Via Partenope, going by the luxury hotels overlooking the bay of Naples and then continuing your walk up to Piazza della Republica.
You can come back the same way or go back through the Villa Comunale - a nice elongated park that runs along the seafront.
Great views of bay of Naples, Castel dell Uovo and Vesuve.
Vesuvius
by mvtouring
Vesuvius is the only active volcano in continental Europe. From the top you have a amazing view of hole Naples. My friend decided to climb the mountain and tried to persuade us to do so, if only we knew that If it is not possible to climb from the bottom. You have to take a bus or jeep to the top and then it is only the last 200 meteres you will able to climb right to the top. It has a bowl shape with a big and deep hole in the middle. In its rich history this volcano has buried towns such as Pompei and Herculaneum. After the last eruption in 1944, a vast crater was formed at the peak, covered with ash, and the plume of smoke which had become part of the classic imagery of Vesuvius disappeared. If you are in Naples dont miss to visit Vesuvius.
Pizza and tasty food
by gmg61 about 'A Tiella
Fresh fish, seafood pasta, and for those who prefere something more traditional, tasty pizza!
Nice ambience with A/C for the hot days. But you can also seat and enjoy the fresh in a tiny lane completely occupied by the restaurant's tables.
Prices are reasonable. Pezzogna all' acqua pazza
A visit to the San Gennaro Catacombs
by egicom05
The Catacombs are a two-level underground cemetery, dating from the 2nd century and boasting many interesting frescoes and mosaics. You can enter the catacombs on Via di Capodimonte (head down an alley going alongside the Madre del Buon Consiglio Church).
The catacombs were dug from the yellow “tufo” (sandstone) of the Aminei hills in Capodimonte. The monument's original nucleus goes back to the beginning of the second century A.D. It had been a patrician family's ancient tomb and was later donated to the Christian Community. In the next centuries (till the tenth) it was transformed and turned into an official cemetery and a meeting point for the Christian Community. It was progressively enlarged (digging the hill) especially after the fifth century, when the bones of San Gennaro (the fervently loved patron Saint of the town) were transferred here and the Catacombs became a pilgrimage site, attracting a growing number of visits and processions (but now the remains of San Gennaro are in the cathedral “Duomo” of Naples).
The Catacombs’ total extension is of five square kilometers, but only a small part can be visited. A guide will conduce you through tunnels and “cubiculum” decorated with pictorial cycles which are among the most important examples of Southern Italian Paleochristian figurative art. Along with several well-preserved frescoes and mosaics there's a depiction of San Gennaro (ninth century).
The tour takes you through the upper level of tunnels, passing through two basilicas totally carved from the rock. The Catacombs remained active until the 10th century, but several graffitos (dated 1700, 1800) on the rocks show that neapolitans never stopped accessing the tunnels, which, during the world war II, served as air raid shelter.
The Catacombs are not frightful and the tunnels are unexpectedly wide and luminous.
If you plan to go there, it is better to make a phone call asking for an english speaking guide and the exact time of beginning of the visit (lasting about 45 minutes).
Ticket: 5 euro.
Chiesa di Santa Chiara
by Willettsworld
The church was commissioned by Robert of Anjou for his wife Sancia and was built in 1310 by Gagliardo Primario. It was heavily bombed during World War II but reconstruction uncovered the original Gothic structure. The tombs of the Angevin monarchs are housed here including Robert the Wise (died 1343), his son Charles of Calabria (died 1328) and Charles' wife Mary of Valois (died 1331).
