Best Location in Naples
by sofibeux
Hello, I will be visiting Naples this June and I'm planning on staying for 3-4 days. I'm currently searching for a hotel, and would like to know what is the best area to stay? In searching Venere.com they have divided Naples in 8 sections Vomero, Chiaia, Posillipo, Fiera Fuorigrotta, Centro Storico, Plebiscito, Capodimonte, and Stazione Centrale. I want to add that I will be visiting Ischia and Pompeii so I would like an area that has easy access to the ferries as well as busses but that is safe enough to walk around. Thank you in advance and hope to hear from someone. :)

I might suggest either Centro Storico or Plebiscito which is right next to it. There are some larger hotels in this area with views of the bay...I haven't stayed in any of those, but I can imagine that the views are spectacular, especially at sunset. I have stayed in a small but nice 3 star in Plebiscito (Chiaia de Charme).
From either of these areas you can easily walk to the harbor from which the boats leave for Capri. You can easily take a cab from your hotel to the train station to catch the Circumvesuviana local commuter train, which is the train to take for Pompei.
Be careful with your possessions in Naples...although I must say that Naples feels a lot safer than it did even three-four years ago. I was just in Naples last week (only a day trip), and for a change, no one in the train station tried to "help" us.
There's still a lot of construction going on related to the new Metro lines, including at the main train station. I'm not sure whether any Metro stations have opened up near the historical center.

Thank you very much for your advice. I have chosen a small 3 star hotel in the centro storico area. :)
Travel Tips for Naples
Festa di San Gennaro
by filip007
Three times in a year occurs the miracle of San Gennaro, the saint that protects Naples.
The miracle dates back to 16th december 1631 when Vesuvius erupted and killed more than 3000 inhabitants, when archbishop took out his head and blood ou of the cathedral and showed the miracle, that brought on the rain and saved the rest of Naples from destruction.
On the first sunday of May (when the body of San Gennaro was brought to Naples), on 19th september (San Gennaro´s nameday) and again on 16th December, the blood of San Gennaro is exposed in Duomo and turns from powder back to real blood. The day before, a big procession carrying the saints from other churches and transporting them to Duomo.
Should the miracle fail to occur, a big disaster would hit Naples - as was the case in 1944 when Vesuvius erupted.
By the way, the miracles form an integrant part of religion in southern Italy and in Naples and the adoration of relics has a long history. In 17th century a priest did an account of the thousands of relics kept in churches in the city (among them 367 whole bodies, 54 heads, 28 elbows... add to this teeth, bones, hair, lots of blood of various saints, clothes, 5 pieces of the cross and 11 thorns of the crown...).
Ferry to Sicily
by fdrich29
If you are taking the ferry from Napoli to Palermo, Sicily and don't already have tickets make sure you go to the ticket office for your carrier (we used SNAV). We had purchased our tickets on line while still in America and were mailed the paper tickets. Arrive at boat by 5:30 PM ( 17:30) and you will be one of the first cars to enter the ferry. It's also pretty cool to get there early and watch them load the trailer trucks. Whether you have a room on the ferry or not it's important not to bring too much with you from your car. Take only the necesseties as it will be a huge pain to drag everything down the stairs in the morning (you'll arrive around 6:30-7:00 am) and you'll have to negotiate through the tights spaces between cars. We did this on the trip to Sicily and learned our lesson as it was really difficult dragging suit cases back to the car and we ended up ruining our clothes with grease in the haste and struggle. If you can bring food with you it would be a pretty good idea as the food on the boat is expensive and poor quality. Be sure to go out on the outer deck's while shoving off to enjoy the view and if you're lucky a beautiful sunset.
Castel Dell'Ovo
by rsleisk
The castle's name stems from a medieval legend which holds that the poet Virgil, who developed a medieval reputation as a great sorceror, had a magical egg put in the foundations to support them.
The edifice is located on a small island, the Megarides, where colonists from Cumae founded the original nucleus of the city in the 6th century BCE. In the 1st century CE the Roman patrician Lucius Licinius Lucullus built a magnificent villa on the site. Fortified by Valentinian III in the early 5th century, it was the place where the last western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was exiled in by Odoacer in 476. Eugippius founded a monastery on the site after 492.
The remains of the Roman-era structures and later fortifications were demolished by local residents in the 9th century to prevent their use by Saracen raiders. The first castle on the site was built by the Normans in the 12th century. The importance of the Castel dell'Ovo began to decline when king Charles I of Anjou built a new castle, Castel Nuovo, and moved his court there. Castel dell'Ovo became the seat of the Royal Chamber and of the State Treasury. The current appearance dates from the Aragonese domination (15th century).
Dome of the chiesa di Francesco di Paola
by extrajoce
Inside this church, don't forget to look up to admire the dome, which is an imitation of the Roman pantheon. It is a superb piece of architecture providing diffuse light below. The church is on Piazza del Plebiscito, in the south-western part of the centre. It was built in 1817.
Statues
by Beograd
Original statues in Roman Empire were made in bronze which they needed later for weapons. So they made all those statues in marbel before using the bronze for weapons. looks like that people in those times used tu think of something nice even in wars! And than human kind evolved...
