Castel dell'Ovo
This old castle has a magnificent location, in the middle of the bay, offering such great views with the Vesuvio. It can be visited - an interesting walk in a very medieval atmosphere, with very good views on the city and bay.

Trying to meet a friend while on an NCL cruise. Does anyone know the approximate distance from the dock to the train station in Naples, and your best guesstimate about the fare amount? Thank you.
My guestimate would be about 2 to 2.5kms. (Just a guess). If memory serves me correctly, I paid about 10euro in a taxi for that trip in 2007.
Kate's guesstimate of the distance is right on the money - not a bad walk if you're up for it, and a short taxi ride otherwise. I am sure there are buses, but by the time you figured it out, you probably would have already walked there ;-)

My daughter-in-law works on one of the cruise ships and two days ago she paid Euros 7 in total for the taxi ride from the ship to the train station. Mind you, she's from South America so is good at bargaining!!
Hi Traveltime,
If you're coming in at Molo Beverello I think I can help. I'll be as detailed as I can because it can be pretty chaotic! At the port you'll see a red and white snack bar and to the left a HUGE castle, Castel Nuovo. If you cross the street to the newsstand you can buy a day pass for the bus for 3.10 euro (which I thought was pricey since we only needed a 15 minute bus ride and if anybody knows a better way...) Walk towards the castle and you will see the bus stops for the Alibus and the orange local ANM buses. Most buses stop at Piazza Garibaldi but read the map to make sure which is the city center and that's where you get off. You can't miss it because the bus driver will usually stop and get off the bus! This is the main station in Naples. It was under construction when my husband and I were there two weeks ago. Circle around to your right and you will see the entrance to the train station. Yes the bus and train station are in the same place. We had no problem taking the buses, don't forget to stamp your ticket in the machine and we had some persistent taxi drivers willing to take us to P. Garibaldi for tre euro which was less than the bus ticket price but if you take a taxi which I think is a waste of money since the buses run regularly DON'T LET THE DRIVER TAKE YOUR BAG AND PUT IT IN THE TRUNK. The day we were leaving a gentlemen waiting for the Alibus to the airport with us at P. Garibaldi took a taxi for tre euro and when he got to the airport the driver informed him that it was an additional due euro for his bag! So don't fall for this trick always make sure that the fare includes your bags if you take a taxi but really we had absolutely no problems taking buses to P. Garibaldi and we stayed at the Hotel Eden which was right across the street but we did take the Circumvesuviana to Mt. Vesuvius so we also took the train. Good luck!

Mt. Vesuvius is the worlds most feared Volcano. This is because if it does erupt it will destroy so much. Also because according to local history the last eruption gave no warning just an explosion. They do have tours here but you will have to walk half way up to see it. But the view you will see from the top is extrodinary.
Hailed as the best pizza place in the city that made the pizza, Da Michele lives up to its expectation and more. Expect to wait in line to get a seat here in the first place - the locals obviously continue to come here day in and day out. Once you're inside you can choose from two pizzas only (margherita with tomato sauce and the region's special mozzarella or marinara with tomato sauce and garlic) and water or italian beer. Words cannot describe how good the pizza was (I got the margherita) ... you just have to try it for yourself. Wow. The pizza margherita ... though I wish I'd had enough time to sample the pizza marinara as well since I'll bet it's just as heavenly.
The castle is magnificent and impressive from the outside. I've heard from a local restaurant owner that they shot a Zorro film at this castle some time ago. The castle also looks fairly impressive at dark. The lights make it look very ancient. When you are in Naples, this place is worth a visit.
As I said, there are a few castles in Naples. The one I visited was very interesting, and this is all that I saw from another one. Once again, I regret that I can't say anything more about these places... But someday if i return, I promise to find more information.
