Or just thought of it...if you want to take a tour from Sorrento to Naples for half or full day and your budget can stretch to allow for could book a car and driver to negotiate a price and they can take you around all the sights ... with lots of flexibility to stop where ever and for how long u want. try email. tel 39 o89 812033 they specialise in the amalfi coast all way through pompeii to naples and beyond.

Travel Tips for Naples

Centro Storico - Napoli

by sargentjeff

The Centro Storico, or Historical Center, is an awesome place to explore. It is literally an open air museum full of churches, museums, and many things you wouldn't expect. Take the Napoli Sotteranea for example. It's an underground acquaduct system built by the Greeks and Romans, A MUST SEE! Also here is the Chiesa Santa Chiara, and outter cloister, The Duomo, Chiesa Gesu Nuovo, and wonderful street where they sell all the famous Napolitan Natvity scenes, which are handmade from cork. This is one of the better places in Naples to explore for sure, and you will not be dissapointed

The photo was taken just north...

by sargentjeff

The photo was taken just north of Naples in Pinetamare. I lived in a hotel on this beach for six months. The beaches are packed in the summer and worth a visit. They are filthy in the off season, but are magically cleaned up in the spring to prep for summer. The waves are pretty small, sorry no surfing, but the water is warm and there are some good discos and restuarants in Pinetamare.
just getting to naples is an accomplishment in itself. Most tourists put it on the list of 'to sees' in Italy, but never make it that far south. This is the heart and soul of Italy. The people are actually warm and friendly. Family is still valued here, and like the saying goes 'see naples and die'.. go to a real Italian market, you never know what you might find. Posillipo is the high class area and has the best view of the city and bay of naples.
Head to Sorrento as well, you can take the ferry from the port. Capri is also a must.

Napolitano Cuisine

by seagoingJLW about Foods to Try

Naples is known for the following foods:
Pizza - undoubtedly the symbol of Naples
Vermicelli - served with clams, mussels, and smaller shellfish
Struffuli - cookies with Strega liqueur
Pastiere - cakes made with ricotta and orange syrup
Zeppole - cookies made frwith black cherry liqueur

Castel Sant Elmo

by wilocrek

Castel Sant Elmo is perched atop a hill that overlooks Naples and Mt. Vesuvius. Getting to Elmo can be done in various ways, I found the best way was by walking up the narrow, winding streets from Piazza de Plebiscito. All I had to do was keep Elmo in sight and I was able to get there without a problem and was treated to a magnificent walk through old Naples...definitely a adventure. I didn't have a chance to tour the Castle as it was closed on Wednesdays, but the views of the Bay of Naples made it well worth the trek.

la Guglia di San Gennaro

by MM212

The oldest of Napoli's three monumental spires, la Guglia di San Gennaro is dedicated to the patron saint of the city. It was erected in 1636 by the city to express gratitude for being spared the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1631. The renowned Neapolitan architect-sculptor, Cosimo Fanzago, took on the project and created a richly carved obelisk-column, mounted by a statue of the saint himself. La Guglia di San Gennaro is located in a small piazza next to the side of il Duomo and opposite Pio Monte della Misericordia on Via dei Tribunali.
