train from naples to rome

by ellieinmj

we,would like to go from sorrento to rome. we know that you take the circumvesuviana train to naples and that you catch a train to rome in the same station, but when we went on the trenitalia website, it said some trains (ES) left from Garibali and some trains left from Napoli centre (IC). Are these two different stations? Also, which train would you suggest, as the prices vary considerably (we are in no rush) and do you have to make a reservation in advance for second class?

The two train stations are in the same physical location, but one is ground level (Napoli Centrale) and the other below ground. You need to make a reservation for second class on Eurostar trains including the AV (Alta Velocita') and IC (Intercity) trains. No matter which train you take, if you don't reserve a seat, you're not guaranteed a seat...i.e. you might be sitting on your luggage the entire way. Not terribly likely, except on busy holidays or weekends.

I've just got back from Sorrento. We took the train from Rome to Naples on a monday and bought our tickets from the machine where you can also book your seats 5 minutes before jumping on the train. There was plenty of spare space. We took the train from Naples back to Rome yesterday and again bought the tickets at the desk and jumped straight on with automatically allocated seats- That train was almost empty.

From my experience booking does not seem necessary but maybe we were lucky.

Have fun.

Travel Tips for Naples

U must see Santa carlo opera and a shooping complex just opposite it. The area near castle nuva is worth visiting. Then CAPRI....very beutiful island near naples... We asked price of toy to a shopkeeper in naples in hindi(in flow) and he replied instantly that take it free. The person Shah Alam from bangladesh treated us like his younger bros and gave many tips about naples.I tried to buy a bracelet from him and he said its not durable so dont take. The honesty and kindness of an unknown person in unknown country touched me.

Visit Vesuvio

by Slager6

If you are going to visit Pompeii or Herculaneum, you should also visit Mt. Vesuvius. You can hike all the way up to the crater. To reach the summit of Vesuvio, you can take a Trasporto Vesuviano bus from Ercolano train station. Get to Ercolano train station by the Circumvesuviana.

The pizza...

by sissah about Anywhere

So, Naples is the birthplace of pizza, and it's really good here. The margarita pizza is the original -- sauce, mozzerella di buffala and basil. A little random history for you here -- the reason that those are the ingredients are because they wanted to make a dish that represented the colors of the Italian flag. Anyway, really any place you eat at in downtown Naples is going to have great pizza. If you're here, and you eat anything else, you're an idiot.

SPACCANAPOLI: As its name...

by flyingkiwi

SPACCANAPOLI: As its name suggests, this long narrow street splits Naples on two, from high-up in the San Martino district down to the central station. Because of the number of churches and palaces along it, it has been likened to an 'open-air museum'. It's also one of the liveliest parts of the city, with many shops, craft workshops, buzzing university faculties and inviting cafe terraces.

il Duomo - Cappella di San Gennaro

by MM212

Completed in 1646 by the architect Francesco Grimaldi, the Reale Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro is a masterpiece of Neapolitan Baroque architecture. It was constructed as part of the Duomo, to the right hand side of the nave opposite the Basilica di Santa Restituta, to honour the patron saint of Naples, San Gennaro. So important was the saint to Neapolitans that no expense was spared in the construction of his chapel, from richly carved polychrome marble to a dome painted with exquisite frescoes. The renowned Neapolitan artist, Francesco Solimena designed the elaborate altar.
