2nd Cruise stop is Naples, Italy
by luvtrvlg
This would be our 2nd trip in the Naples Area. I've already been to Pompeii and would like any recommendations on other places to see. We have approximately 9 hours in this port and would like to know what would be the best way to spend the 9hours. Any recommendations and tips would be really helpful. Thank you!

Hi, did you ever been in Capri? From Naples is a short trip by boat or hydrofoil (starting from Calata Porta di Massa or Molo Brevetello) and the island really deserve a visit! Alternatively i could suggest Sorrento (about 45 km from Naples), very famous on the Lemons Coast and so charming... Have a nice holiday!

Gilda thank you so much for the info, I just might consider Capri. Is the Hydrofoil accessible from the Port of Naples?

Capri is indeed beautiful. The island can really be crowded with tourists, but after all it's possibly one of the most beautiful islands in Europe.
As for ferries and hydrofoils from Naples to Capri, you'll find most information here:

Eat pizza at Pizzeria Trianon! They close in the late afternoon so you have to be there around lunch or wait until after seven for dinner.

My husband and I were in Naples two weeks ago and we LOVED LOVED Spaccanapoli. If you go to Piazza Plebiscito and the Royal Palace and then just start wandering the back streets you're in Spaccanapoli. I had a great time there. It's like a huge bazaar. We met some folks from DE who were on a cruise as we were having lunch at Pizzeria Brandi which was excellent! I was surprised at some of the prices of some of the dishes but the beer and pizza are extremely reasonable. So I would have to suggest to you the neighborhood of Spaccanapoli (where Pizzeria Brandi http://www.brandi.it/ is located) and although you might feel a little claustrophobic you'll get a feel for how folks live in that part of Naples and my husband and I never felt the least bit threatened or in danger.

Travel Tips for Naples
Great Markets
by yeah_baby
Their markets are where you can see true Naples. The people are so expressive, dramatic and exuberant with their mannerisms. Naples markets also are worth the visit even if you don't intend to buy.
I like the Gucci and Prada designer stores which are located on Piazza dei Martiri, Via Calabritto and Via Filangieri.
by yeah_bab Camorra, the local Italian Mafia used to pollute the streets of Naples, altho lately it has settled down a bit. Still beware of pick pockets that are all over crowded areas. Despite some recent improvement, there is still
a reputation for bag snatching and other petty crime. Car crime is especially prevalent, so don't take a car into Naples if possible and watch for small scams, like always check your change, and see that cab meters are reset and running before you set off.
Casalnuovo

The sort of area you're likely to visit only as a business travel, it is adjacent to the main railway station and comprises loads of high rise buildings hosting offices of different companies.
A piece of America in Napoli!
genuine napolitain pizza
by sinoda about ? couldn't figure out
After having gotten rid of the rent-car we set out to find a pizzeria. But it wasn't actaully as easy as one could imagine, now , we're in Napoli after all!
How hard can that be?
Depending on the time of day it can! We were unlucky to check with the famous pizzeria Iris (piazza Garibaldi) at 5.30pm for they wouldn't open for another hour... So we went around the piazza clock-wise until we reached the railway station at the corner to corso Novara (for no pizzeria would open before 6.30-7pm) all hungry, almost ready to give up and have something at the station's bar...
But then there it was a misterious little entrance. We decided to try one last time and fortunate enough as we had been all day they told us they would make us our so appreciated pizzas alla napolitana.
With a filled belly we headed to the train and to Rome...
Steamy hot
by maybetara
A visit to the Sulfutara (I'm sure I'm spelling it wrongly, I'm sorry) - another volcano, this time, with a town built all around it - can be really interesting. As we walked on the crater, steam wafting from spots on the hot ground and condensing in trickles on my sunglasses in the chilly air, as well as a variety of popping, fizzing and bubbling sounds all around us reminded us that we were walking on thinly-covered unguessably deep pools of lava that were threatening to explode out of the ground just about ... anytime.
Despite my vigorous protests, my boyfriend bundled me into a small and low sulphur-steam suffe ('stove') built into the side of the crater. he did so because I have asthma and a sign next to the suffe says that breathing in the sulphur-laced steam is good for respiratory illnesses. Firstly, I'd like to say that it was very HOT. My nose ran for hours afterwards. Also, isnt sulphur poisonous? I was sure I'd exhaled 2 yrs off of my life after 15 minutes in the suffe but strangely enough, I've not had any respiratory problems since that suffe experience. a miracle!
Inside Basilica di Santa Chiara

This beautiful medieval building was built in the beginning of the 14th century, and also has a convent. It has been beautifully restored to a very minimal decoration, giving it a superbly austere mood. It is nothing like any other church in the city, and provides a good idea of the style before the Renaissance changed everything in religious art and architecture. It is in the centre of via dei Capitelli, Staccanapoli.
