travel from Positano to Pescara - need advice

by abbilello

I am going to be in Positano and heading over to Pescara from there. I am guessing the best way is to get a ride to Naples and take a bus from there but I can't find any information online about how to do this? Anyone have suggestions?

What about flying from Naples to Pescara. Pescara has international flights landing there, they should have domestic as well. If not, then train would be better than bus.

If you like the airplane suggestion, then look at www.whichbudget.com - oops, I already did...an airline called Flyonair makes the trip - see www.flyonair.it . I know nothing about it (never heard of it)...

Usually, I would recommend the train, but east-west train routes are not as well developed as north-south routes. In this case, it is faster to go by bus, because the bus is direct, whereas most of the rail solutions involve at least two connections.

For the bus, you will use SATAM (http://www.gruppolapanoramica.it/satam.htm - only in Italian). The bus leaves from Piazza Garibaldi in Naples (i.e., the main train station), and arrives at the Bus Terminal in Pescara (in most Italian cities, this is not far from the train station).

On weekdays (Monday-Saturday), the bus leaves Naples at 07:00, 10:00, and 14:40, and the trip takes 4 hours. On Sundays and holidays, the bus leaves at 08:00, 15:00, and 17:30.

Of course, you'll need to take the bus from Positano over to Piazza Garibaldi in Naples first, or take the bus to Sorrento and the Circumvesuviana train up to Naples...

OK?

Or take the bus from Positano (or coastal ferry, if you are there when it's running.also goes to Sorrento and Naples) to Salerno and get the train to Napoli Centrale from there.

Coastal ferry: www.metrodelmare.com

Other Positano >Salerno etc ferry:

Positano>Sorrento bus timetables:

For bus to Naples you'd have to go first to either Amalfi or Sorrento.

Italian train times, details, fares in English:

Naples>Pescara by train takes just over 5 hours. Flying will not be quicker once you have allowed time to get to Naples airport, checked-in (at least 30 minutes before departure), flown and got yourself out of Pescara airport and from the airport to the town centre.

Travel Tips for Naples

Naples Bay

by extrajoce

The Bay of Naples is one of the most impressive settings for a city. The city itself is actually on two bays separated by the Castel dell'Ovo, with the center being on the east, and Mergellina on the west (roughly). This is the view of the western bay - a very scenic look into a unique city.

Packing List

by unexplored

Southern Italy can get very hot in summer. Do take a light jacket for any cool evenings. Take a supply of useful medicaments with you(insect repellant, sun lotion, antiseptic cream)and stick to bottled water.

Traffic Traffic Traffic

by sargentjeff

I have been in serious traffic jams in Naples and some of them were caused by demonstrations in the streets. One day a bunch of people were protesting something and blocked off the street by a Tangenziale exit during evening rush hour traffic. Cars were backed up for many city blocks. Polizei didn't do anything but direct cars to go a different route. Unfortunately there was another demonstration at the "other" route we took as well.

Archological Museum

by Balam

The Museo Nazionale, one of the best Roman Empire Museums in the world. Many of the ruins and rests of Pompeii and Herculaneum are exposed here. You’ll find sculptures of Mythological gods and emperors’ busts. You shouldn’t miss the mosaics section, with the best works from Pompeii. Other interesting sections are: "Sala dei Papiri", with the best Herculaneum’s findings, and the pictures section.

If you have been to Pompeii and Herculaneum this museum is a must. The statues and other items are fantastic

Visit the port/harbor

by nyonnetti

Naples has a bustling port, filled with huge cruise ships and boats for trips to Capri. We walked down to the harbor area from the Cavour metro stop, following a walking tour recommended by our guide book. The thing to keep in mind is the pollution and noise from the cars can overwhelm you. It would also be good to be careful as the driving here is like nothing I have ever seen before. If you thought Rome had some crazy driving, than wait till you see Naples!
