After exploring the archaelogical site we enjoyed a look inside the museum - not in the least because it was air conditioned too.
Many artifacts from the temples are displayed in the many airy rooms and are well worth a look. The entrance fee of 6.50 euros (2003) also covers the entrance to the museum so hold onto your ticket.
The ancient walls surrounding Paestum run for more than four and a half kilometers. Originally, twenty-eight towers stood along the walls, but few remain today (there is one at the southwest corner where you can actually ascend the wall and walk along it to the tower).
The most important tomb discovered in the necropolis of the ancient Greek colony of Poseidonia was the so-called "Tom of the Diver" dated 470-60 and discovered in 1968.
Its an unusual example of early classical polychrome painted tomb. The underside of the lid shows a man diving off a platform into the sea and side walls show symposium with older and younger males reclining on couches, some scenes are homoerotic.
I enjoyed my time in Paestum much more than my time in Pompeii or Herculaneum. It is a beautiful, country-side location with few tourists and even fewer commercialism. The ruins are amazing and so unlike anything else you can see in this part of the world. I would highly recommend that anyone visiting the south of Italy make a stop at this beautiful archaeological site!
