positano and credit cards

by genebeans

Have been in Positano many times but this time going with family and I used to just get ATM cash and pay for meals. Now with the family this is not a good idea-Do most restaurants take credit cards as I just won,t have enough cash to handle most dinners etc. Thanks

Re: positano and credit cards

Hmmm - seems that some will take credit but some other may only take cash. We found this to be the norm in Rome so it's good to have both options available. You might want to research some places in advance if you would prefer to pay with credit?

Just want to add an important point here. Be sure to let your bank know about your travel plans. Frequently the banks will lock up a credit card that all of a sudden shows charges away from normal local charges. Make sure that you speak to a live person at the bank. If something does happen and your card is blocked, having a note in your account explaining your travels will make it a lot easier to correct the problem. Banks do this for your protection. It is a good idea to carry two cards just in case of one being shut down.

Good point, Erik.

We had no trouble using our credit card in restaurants. My husband always checks before we are seated though. You might want to do the same.

Do heed the advice above to call your credit card company and bank so they know where you are.

Have a great time.

Thank you Beau again--I will take your advice which makes sense and McCalpin also told me he has had no trouble in most places so checking is sound advice. I also do notify ATM cards and credit cards that I am away--Many thanks for taking time-Gene

Travel Tips for Positano

Majolica Domes

by sandysmith

The domes of the churches in this area are really colourful with their majolica tiles. I really loved this view of the dome of the church as we made our way down into Positano and the puple flower added to the impact.

Il Sentiero degli Dei (The God's Path)

by gmg61

That's a nice walk that in about 4 hours will lead you from Positano o the tiny village of Nocelle (and you'll have to climb 1.700 steps!) and then to Agerola along an easy trail that will offer you wonderful views on the Amalfi Coast from a high point of view. The trail is located between 400 and 600 meters above the sea level and from there you'll enjoy wonderful aerial vies of the coast and the towns of Positano, Praiano and Vettica.

Follow the steps to Nocelle and once there, turn to the right. You'll see a big painted arrow on a wall with the sign "Agerola" that's the beginning of the trail. The trail is well marked with red and white marks and red arrows. No difficulties, but sometimes the trail is narrow and goes on the real edge of the rock, with 600 metres of empty space between you and the sea! It's an easy walk, you’ll need good shoes and plenty of water because you'll find any water source along the way. There is one bar and restaurant in Nocelle and some of them in the square of Bomerano, where you'll arrive.

Praiano is a picturesque fishing village - a close neighbour to Positano. Its a smaller and less well known resort but that means it will be less crowded with tourists and the accompanying trappings.
We didn't actually visit the village but we enjoyed looking down on it from far above on the Sentiero Degli Dei path to Positano.

Great food, wonderful view at Lo Guarracino.

by Erin74 about Lo Guarracino

Lo Guarracino is a wonderful, unpretentious restaurant tucked away into the mountainside of Positano and overlooking the ocean. It's not as crowded as the restaurants down on the beach, but the views are just as wonderful and the food is even better. This was the best meal we had while in Positano. The wine is served in earthenware carafes. Order lots of it. I had a wonderful spinach and cheese ravioli dish and the bruschetta was very tasty. My friends enjoyed the lasagna and pasta l'arrabiata.

Pizza deals!

by ct-bound

Down on the beach (Spaggia Grande), there is a restaurant that specializes in take-away pizzas. The prices there were very very inexpensive, especially if you get whatever the special of the day is (for example, they will give you 2 for the price of 1), only if you take it away. Pizza Funghi
