Furore, along the Amalfi coast
amalfi coast and Hurculaneum
We will be on a cruise in October that will be in the port of Naples for one day. We would like to see Hurculanueum and the Amalfi coast. It seems like that would be a tough trip on a good day. Our ship offers this tour (Pompeii instead) plus a lunch too. I think it would be a very hurried up experience. We want to spend less time eating and more time exploring the sites. We think doing the sites on our own will give us an oppertunity to see more of what we want to see. The only problem is trying to figure out the traveling modes. From what I can tell the train to Serrento then the bus to Amalfi will be at least 2 1/2 hours one way (total of 5 hrs of just riding) We then don't have time to see Hurculaneum. The Metro del Mare is about 2 hour one way but I can't figure out the time schedule from their chart. Any help would be appreciated. Is a shorter route Via a Northern way. Train to Salerno then bus to Almafi. Can this be done? Is it worth it.
Re: amalfi coast and Hurculaneum
The Amalfi Coast is a lot more than the city of Amalfi. The Circumvesuviano train to Pompeii continues on and ends in Sorrento, a nice place. The bus ride from Sorrento to Positano, one of the two loveliest cities on the peninsula is at most 45 minutes each way. You need not go on to Amalfi to appreciate this beauty of the region.
Travel Tips for Salerno
Furore: the only 'fjord' in Italy
The only 'fjord' in Italy (and maybe all along the Mediterranean coasts) is in Furore. Between Vietri and Amalfi, you may see it for a brief while, while you pass on a small bridge between a tunnel and a sharp bend. If you're able to stop the car along the very narrow coast road, go back and take a picture. The one I included has been taken there, but the fjord itself is under my feet.
Ravello. A very nice place up on the hill, 500 metres above the sea, It lies amid the lemon and olive trees, as if a balcony over the gulf of Sorrento. An unforgettable place.
