Weather beinning of January
by Spunke
Hello
My wife and I are really considering coming to Italy this January and tour in and around Capri/Amalfi this winter. We are concerned about the weather. We don't expect it to be beach weather but being from the States we were thinking that it would be warmer.
Anyway, can anyone tell me what to expect in terms of weather and if this is a really bad idea?
thank you

I'm answering you here as well.
The weather should not be a problem if you pack accordingly....and it certainly should not stop you doing anything in the way of visits etc.
Weather is unpredictable anyway, so one can only judge by averages (just a rough idea). Nowhere in the Med is particularly warm in January I'm afraid.
Sorrento climate here:

It will definitely feel chilly once the sun goes down, even if daytime temps are pleasant, and rain is quite possible.

The real problem with rain on the Amalfi road is for mud slides. It can delay travel time from a few hours to a day, if big enough. My wife and I have been several times to the Amalfi Coast region and once, during a rain storm found that the road was closed at Sorrento due to mud slides for the entire day. Not even bus transportation was allowed thru. Sorrento is a lovely port city with lots to do and you can still do Capri as long as the sea is not too heavy with waves if it rains. :-(

Yes, there can indeed be mud/landslides which block the coast road....but there are other ways to explore, if necessary (and no problem with a car, because you can simply take another route).

Here is a table of average temperatures in the Amalfi region throughout the year:

Other than the occasional mudslide and issues with high seas impeding trips on the water, do be aware that January is very much off season in Capri - many of the shops and restaurants will be closed. I'm NOT saying don't go as there will be good hiking around the island to lovely spots and a few places open but if you are looking for browsing and nightlife, it's not a great time to visit. Sorrento should be good, though,

Thanks Goodfish
We are not looking for night life Just love Italy and it is a time that we can get away. I will check out the tables, if it is 50-60 average then that should be fine.
Thanks

Do feel free to ask more questions if you need to, either on this thread or (better, because more members will see it) post a new question in the Sorrento (or wherever) forum.
Travel Tips for Sorrento
Boat ride to Naples
by meteorologist1
We took a boat ride from Sorrento to Naples through the Tyrrhenian Sea (Bay of Naples), and the view was spectacular. The water was blue. The sky was blue. And you could get a clear view of the distant volcano. It was very enjoyable.
Tourist stuff
by GUYON about Vie Fuoro
The local craft is sold in this narrow and shadowy street . Clothes, table cloth, napkin and of course the famous local Limoncello Expensive. Generally you can find the same good cheaper Corso d'Italia
Take-away pizza
by barryg23 about The Red Lion
With a name like 'The Red-Lion', we expected this to be your regular English pub abroad: sky-sports, darts and pool.... However, it seemed like quite a nice place, plus they idd a great deal on take away pizzas for only 3 euro.
Casual stroll to 1BC !!!!
by Pawtuxet
The thing about travelling in Sorrento...or many European cities ... at least for an American... is the absolutely amazing fact that you can be taking a casual walk down the street and come upon the remains of a house that was built in 1 BC !!! Hard for me to wrap my head around that. Nonetheless....there it is. Keep your eyes open at all times.
Bathing Platforms
by Balam
Beaches are a rarity near Sorrento because of the cliffs (although there is a nice one in town at Marina Grande), Were the cliffs are there are steps down (sometimes a lift) and large bathing platforms stretch out into the sea. There is normaly a charge for using them
