 | Grand Hotel Aminta: One of the Best in the World (for me!)

Hotel Aminta (from their website) by Callavetta My first experience with the Aminta was after fleeing a very hot, crowded and overwhelming Rome. We took the train to Naples and timidly navigated the train station there to the Circumvisuviana train. From the Sorrento Train station the taxi wound it's way through the lovely town and up into the hills, depositing us in the very beautiful Aminta lobby with the most spectacular views ever. The Aminta's wonderful staff is only one of the things that made me fall in love with this hotel. By the time we wrapped up our five day stay here, they felt like friends. Our room had a balcony with a view of the Bay of Naples that I could gaze at forever. It is hard to take in all the elements of that view; the bouganvillas, the orange groves, the cliffs, Sorrento tumbling down the hillside, and then the glorious blue blue sea. And in the distance; Mt. Visuvius.
My favorite place was one of the outdoor cafe tables that line the deck overlooking Sorrento. Here Tonino, the best bar man in Italy, would bring me wine or whatever else my heart desired. I loved eating a lunch of caprese and pizza in this spot. Amazing how a modest lunch with a fabulous view can rival the far more expensive dining experiences in famous restaurants. | Hotel Desiree: Good Price, Good Service, Decent Location

After a long, confused walk in the wrong direction I made my way up the Cape to Hotel Desiree. Located in an older building hanging off the edge of the cliff, Hotel Desiree is a quiet, relaxing hotel not too far from the city center (two minutes by car, ten minutes by foot). Reception is on the top floor and the rooms are on the lower floors; there is no elevator. My room was clean and had a balcony with views of the cape and sea (but not the city). The hotel has a private beach at the foot of the cliff. This hotel stands out due to the excellent service at the front desk. Employees are really eager to provide assistance, and can provide maps of Sorrento and Pompeii, transportation information and schedules, and suggestions regarding local attractions. The man working at the front desk went out of his way to contact the harbour authority (after tourist information didn't answer the phone) to find out whether seasonal boat service from Sorrento to Amalfi had begun yet. I paid EUR 60 for a single room with breakfast in high season. Prices are very reasonable compared to other Sorrento hotels. * * * * * ARRIVAL INSTRUCTIONS (by foot) Upon exiting the train station, walk down the little hill to Corso Italia. Turn left and keep walking (past the big piazza), and KEEP RIGHT along the water! The hotel is about a ten minute walk (with luggage) from the point where Corso Italia becomes Via del Capo. It's not hard to find but the streets are very poorly marked. Consider bringing a map printed from Via Michelin.

 | Mediterraneo: Mediterraneo

Hotel Mediterraneo is located in Sant'Agnello di Sorrento, a 15/20 min. (flat) walk to downtown Sorrento. The location is lovely: high on a cliff overlooking the Bay of Sorrento. The hotel is at the border of the sea ... well, at about 140 steps! BUT there's an elevator in the hotel that brings you right on the (black sandy) small beach. The hotel has rooms overlooking the Bay. These rooms are facing the street and during the day there is quite some traffic. That's why we chose to have a room facing the pool/garden. The staff is very professional and extremely helpful. The hotel restaurant 'Vesuvio' is located on the top floor and has a magnificent panoramic view on the Bay. It has also a small terrace where guests can have their breakfast in the morning. Lovely!
The hotel has recently been refurbished. It has all modern amenities like double glazed windows, sat-TV, direct dial phone, minisafe, minibar, A/C, ... The Mediterraneo being an old building the walls are thin. In case you're a bad sleeper, bring ear plugs! The rooms as well as the bar, salon and restaurant are nicely decorated, in light blue and off-white/beige. Even the china is off-white with light blue! The garden is a great place to relax, either by the pool or on the lovely garden terrace amidst the lemon/orange trees or under the palmtrees. Here's where you can have a drink or enjoy lunch (their home made pizza, baked in an authentic wood oven is to die for!). On some nights there's live Napolitan music in the garden. Food: Breakfast is buffet style with a variety of rolls, bread and pastry. Furthermore fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals, cheese & cold meats, eggs, bacon, ... Dinner is served at the table with a daily changing menu (to choose from 5 starters, 5 mains and 5 desserts). The food was of excellent quality. The restaurant has also an extensive wine list. | Grand Hotel President Sorrento: Grand Hotel President

Our room (no. 143) by myriam_c The Grand Hotel President is part of the Acampora Group and of the "Charm & Relax" hotel chain. We stranded in this hotel for 3 nights because the hotel we had reservations for (Mediterraneo - see my other tip) had been overbooked. The President is located on Capo di Sorrento, high in the mountains overlooking the Bay of Sorrento. Location is very quiet. A walk to downtown Sorrento will take about 25 min. (downhill). The hotel has a free shuttle that doesn't run very frequently. The Sita bus stop is on the main road, about 5 min. walk from the hotel. The GH President is perched on the hill and the entrance is at the 5th (top) floor. This means that all the rooms are on lower levels. No problem for rooms facing the Bay. They all have a splendid view. If you have a room not facing the Bay, be prepared to have a view on the parking lot or, if you're on floor 1 or 2, even on a grey wall! If you don't mind paying extra for Bay view, this is indeed extraordinary.
The hotel's location is perfect if you want to be in a quiet neighbourhood. The staff is very polite and helpful. The pool area is not very large (towels have to be paid) but there's an extra solarium with jacuzzi on the top floor. The hotel also disposes of a professional beauty centre. Our room was large, had a large balcony, and all modern amenities like sat-TV, mini safe, minibar, A/C, ... The restaurant overlooks the Bay of Sorrento. Food was very good. Breakfast is buffet style with various rolls & bread, fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurts, cheese & cold meats, eggs, bacon, ... Dinner is served at the table with a daily varying menu (choice from different starters, mains and desserts). | Hotel Savoia Sorrento: Superb pancakes............

This is a really, really nice little hotel. It's a little away from the main town, but within easy walking distance of both Piazza Tasso (the main square, 5 mins) and the Circumvesuviana railway station and bus terminal (10 mins max). so you have the best of both worlds.......easy access to everything but without too much traffic noise. The rooms are next door to the reception/breakfast area, accessible using the keycard, up a flight of stairs to the first floor (there is a lift, for which one has to pay). They are stunningly clean and very spacious, all non-smoking, with balconies to sit on. Marble floors (a bit cold in winter, bring some slippers!) and electronic wooden shutters. Shower pressure was good, water was hot and plentiful, central heating worked well (I needed it in February), beds were a little firm (Italian beds are, I find) but comfortable. Extra blankets and pillows were provided, and there is a TV and safe in the room (and internet access too, I think). The owners speak good English and are friendly and very helpful. Breakfast is really good, with cereals/rolls/bread/brioche/preserves etc as well as excellent pancakes and 'eggs', if you choose (I did, scrambled, and very good they were too) as well as juice/coffee/tea etc. The only disadvantage I could think of is the lack of a fridge Well worth staying here, I think, for convenience of access in a quieter part of town.......and for the pancakes!
Friendly owners, lovely pancakes, cleanliness. Have got to put the directions here as they are too long for the box below! From the bus/train station follow road to the left (if you can cope with steps), then up steps on your right, right down Via Degli Aranci, cross just before the road bridge and go down the steps on the left of it. Left again to hotel (on left). Without the steps, walk straight down to Corso Italia from bus/train station (or get off bus at Piazza Tasso), then left again to P. Tasso, left up Via Fuorimura, under the road bridge and hotel is on the left.

The hostel is average, when we arrived despite booking months in advance they told us that there was no room in the main dorm but they could offer us a 4 bed room in the next building for more money! This is the only hostel in Sorrento so we could not refuse!
We stayed in the building next door, which was a few floors up, in with private apartments. The room was small for four people and very noisy at any time of the day or night because it is located on a busy main road. Breakfast is included in the cost and comprises of coffee, tea, juice or cappucino (which was always cold)! The rooms are clean, and the showers huge. There is NO common area as such here, but the bar next door to the hostel is owned by the same people and so they offer a happy hour to the hostel crowd...a big bottle of Peroni for 2 euro - not bad at all!
