Travelling from Sorrento to Rome

by JMO1

We were under the impression that we would have to travel from Sorrento to Naples and then on to Rome but is it possible to travel straight to Rome? We are travelling on a Sunday and so are concerned that the transport may be limited. If we can travel straight from Sorrento to Rome that would be far better.

Hello,

I believe you must go through Naples and then catch the train onto Rome. Trenitalia does not offer a direct train. I do know there is a commuter train that goes from Sorrento to Naples station. This is the one you will have to use. The trip is about an hour. From Naples to Rome is 1.5-2 hours depending on the train you take.

Unless you are traveling on a holiday you should have no problem getting seats on the train. Make your reservation from naples to Rome as soon as you get to Italy and you will have no problems.

As I noted on your other thread, you will have no problems whatsoever.

Simply take the frequent and inexpensive Circumvesuviana train from /sorrento to Napoli Centrale station, where you will get the train to Rome.

http://www.vesuviana.it/Reteeorari/Ferrovia/Orario

give timetables (Linea Napoli>Sorrento).

Services are not so reduced on Sundays as to cause you any problems.

www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html will give you details of trains from Naples to Rome.

I am guessing here.....are you from the UK? If so, I can assure you that Italian public transport on Sundays is nhing whatever like that in the UK! :-)

There may be some bus services from Sorrento to Rome run by this company:

It should give you timetables and fares. However, the site is only in Italian and does not list any Sunday services at present.

Travel Tips for Sorrento

A little bit of ancient history........

by leics

There is no doubt that Sorrento is an ancient settlement, existing long before the Romans turned it into a seaside-holiday venue, but there is little of this visible today.

However, if you turn left up Via Sersale from Corso Italia you will come to the Porta Parsano Nuova: the 'new' Parsano gate. The Roman town was built directly over the preceding Greek street-plan, and the later Medieval walls which replaced the Roman ones followed the same line. So, although the 'gate' itself dates from the 1500s, if you look down you will see the original Greek wall remaining as a foundation. The stone blocks are huge, and the walls must have been an imposing sight.

There's also a little bit of ancient wall remaining in Via Sopra Le Mura.

Ferry to Capri

by jinwenwang

Ferry leave at 9am from Sorrento bay to Capri. Takes about 1 hour to arrive at Capri Island. Cost euro7 from Sorrento, euro9.50 back from Capri.

Minibus up to the town on top called Anacapri. Expect expensive food and drink there.

Cable from Anacapri centro to the highest point costs euro5.

Enjoy the beautiful weather and gardens

I was walking around and found a lovely park with beautiful statues along the waterfront. It was so pretty and refreshing. The day couldn't have been more beautiful. The views of the seaside and homes perching on the cliffs is just breathtaking.

Pompeii

by barryg23

Pompeii is very close to Sorrento and is a must-see for any visitor to the region. More than two million people visit the ruins of the ancient city, destroyed by the lava-flow from Vesuvias in AD 79. The circumvesuviana (see transport tip) stops in Pompeii. From Sorrento it costs 1.80 for a single and the journey takes about 30 minutes.
