Parking in Sorrento

by hiflya

I'll be leaving for my second trip to Sorrento next week.
I'll be staying at the Hilton for 6 nights (free with certs!)
I understand that the Hilton is up a decent hill and it could present a challenge for my foot injury.
As we will be renting a car during this trip, can anyone suggest a place to park in town when we are going down the hill?

Sorrento is a lousy place for a car. The traffic around town center during the day is insane and at night they close some of the streets around the piazza (including a section of Via Corso Italia) to all but pedestrians. If I were you, I'd park the car at the hotel and use public transit and taxi.

I found this on http://www.holidaycityeurope.com/hilton-sorrento-palace/map.html:

"Public transportation bus departs every 40 minutes from hotel (your Hilton) to Sorrento train station, Piazza Tasso and Corso Itallia in the centre between 08 AM and 7.15 PM. (In the summer additional departures.) Tickets available at the Front Desk at 1 Euro one way."

Check with the desk about when the last bus leaves town for the hotel and hail a taxi if staying out too late in the evening to catch the last cab.

When we were in Sorrento, we left the car at our hotel and took the bus. It would be much easier and the buses are very nice there.

Enjoy a beautiful area.

Thanks - that's what I figured.
I did notice there a few local VT members and hoped they might have some "secret" tips.
The thought paying over $20 for a few minutes in a taxi stinks.

Well, if you catch the local bus during the day, you should only need a taxi for later at night. Truly, the traffic in central Sorrento is chaos.

circumvesuviana

by doug48

by train, the only way to get to sorrento is via the circumvesuviana. the twenty mile trip from naples takes an hour ! the reason for the length of the trip is that the circumvesuviana is a commuter train and it makes 35 stops. it is crowded, and in the summer very hot, but it is an inexpensive way to get to pompeii and sorrento. from sorrento to pompeii is not so bad. it takes about 30 minutes and is not so crowded. when i arrived at the sorrento train station it was an easy walk down the hill to my hotel at the piazza tasso. but with luggage, i decided to take a taxi back up the hill back to the train station. the two block taxi ride was 10 euros. if you are physically fit, the hike up the hill will save you 10 euro.

italy's best gelato

by ablphillips about primavera

if you're looking for the best gelato in italy the place to get it is on corso italia in a small gelataria called "primavera". it has a huge variety of flavours as well as hundreds of photo's of celebrities covering the walls! it lies between corso italia and via san caesaro, can be a little hard to spot as it is a very small shop but well worth searching for!! try the amarena or limone or tiramisu but they are all fantastic! and one is never enough!!!

Oranges

by Kaynisa

Alrighty in the city what captured my attention is the orange trees planted and growing healthy by the pavement.... i tell ya not a sight you would see in malaysia... but the folks there told me that the oranges is sour and not like the usual orange that we buy to eat... not many people like this type or oranges.. they are mainly for display only... but hey what an idea... imagine malaysia planting the spiky durian trees along the highway or even the walk way in teh city... it wil definitely be a sight to watch out for.

Marinas

by Jetgirly

Sorrento has two marinas: Marina Grande and Marina Piccola (Big Marina and Small Marina). They are located below the city center and can be accessed by foot, car or public bus. At Marina level you will find public beaches, boat rentals and transportation connections to other destinations along the Amalfi Coast (including Capri, Positano and Amalfi). Tickets are sold directly at Marina level, and there are restaurants and snackbars to fill you up before your boat trip.
