Noisy town
by GUYON
According to the legend, Ulysses came there. He made his companion's hears blocked to avoid they listen to the siren's song and were drowned. But he asked for beeing tied to enjoy the beautiful songs without beeing drowned.
If he was back, he would ask to be tied as well but only to not heared the noise of the traffic. The picture was shot Corso Italia, on Piazza Tasso, the main place of Sorrento.
Torquado Tasso is a poet born in Sorrento in 1544. He is the famous man of the city.
Standa
by barryg23
Most places in Sorrento were rather expensive, so it was useful to have a local supermarket in the town. Standa must be the only shop in Sorrento to close before 10pm and on Sundays, but it was a great place to buy presents such as limoncello and wine or just to get things for picnics.
Where to get the best pizza around Sorrento
by eracle about Bar L'Archetto
As you know "bar" in Italy is used instead of "Coffee House". This one is a family run business located inside the historical center of Sant'Agnello (5 minutes away by car) in the area called "Maiano".
The owner, Tonino Isola, is a master pizzaiolo and its pizza is absolutely amazing and very economical. Just let him know what toppings you want on your pizza and in few minutes you are going to taste the most incredible and tasty pizza you will EVER eat in Sorrento.
Villa Comunale
by toonsarah
For possibly the best views in Sorrento, head to the Villa Comunale. This small park (really little more than a town square) is perched above the Bay of Naples and offers breathtaking views across the bay to the city on its far side, with Vesuvius ever-present above. Almost directly beneath you are the jetties of the Marina San Francesco, and a little to the right those of the Marina Piccola (despite its name, the largest marina in the town) from where the ferries to the islands and to Naples leave. Round the headland on your left is the Marina Grande – see separate tip about this.
On a hot day the park would also make a shady spot in which to take shelter from the sun. Nearby is the baroque Chiesa di San Francesco – we didn’t go in as it seemed too nice a day to miss a moment of the sunshine, but I was taken by the striking modern statue of the saint outside (photo 3)
Gorge!
by BorneoGrrl
Sorrento is built on top of magnificent cliffs and a deep gorge runs through the town center or Piazza Tasso. The walls built along the gorge to support the structure above it look pretty intimidating!
Be warned : climbing up the stairs by the wall is really tiring so wear comfortable shoes or use the bus!!
