Grand Hotel President

The Grand Hotel President is part of the Acampora Group and of the "Charm & Relax" hotel chain.
We stranded in this hotel for 3 nights because the hotel we had reservations for (Mediterraneo - see my other tip) had been overbooked.

The President is located on Capo di Sorrento, high in the mountains overlooking the Bay of Sorrento. Location is very quiet. A walk to downtown Sorrento will take about 25 min. (downhill). The hotel has a free shuttle that doesn't run very frequently. The Sita bus stop is on the main road, about 5 min. walk from the hotel.

The GH President is perched on the hill and the entrance is at the 5th (top) floor. This means that all the rooms are on lower levels. No problem for rooms facing the Bay. They all have a splendid view. If you have a room not facing the Bay, be prepared to have a view on the parking lot or, if you're on floor 1 or 2, even on a grey wall! If you don't mind paying extra for Bay view, this is indeed extraordinary.

Unique Quality: The hotel's location is perfect if you want to be in a quiet neighbourhood.
The staff is very polite and helpful.

The pool area is not very large (towels have to be paid) but there's an extra solarium with jacuzzi on the top floor. The hotel also disposes of a professional beauty centre.

Our room was large, had a large balcony, and all modern amenities like sat-TV, mini safe, minibar, A/C, ...

The restaurant overlooks the Bay of Sorrento.
Food was very good.
Breakfast is buffet style with various rolls & bread, fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurts, cheese & cold meats, eggs, bacon, ...
Dinner is served at the table with a daily varying menu (choice from different starters, mains and desserts).

One of the best Hotels I've ever been in.

The Hotel was fantastic. The staff were efficient and very friendly. The food and service were excellent. Our room was very comfortable and spotless. We paid the extra for a sea view and it was worth every penny. (request a high floor)

Unique Quality: The views from the President have to be seen to be believed. It stands high on a mountain side above Sorrento. You can see the whole of Sorrento, the Bay of Naples and Vesuveus looming out of the mist across the bay. The hotel had it's own free bus service running into Sorrento and back several times a day. There was a good path into Sorrento down the mountain side for the more active guest.

More about Grand Hotel President Sorrento

Don't book through x-hotels

by A TripAdvisor Member

We booked on line through x-hotels an American internet company - a de-lux sea view room at the Hotel Grand President for 8 nights. When we arrived we were put into a room underneath the swimming pool, along side the pool pump room. The only part of the booking which was correct was that we could see the sea. The room was filled with chlorine gas which made it difficult to breath. My husband complained to the reception and said no way was this a de-lux room as booked etc etc. The receptionist said there was nothing they could do until tomorrow when other rooms would become available. We contacted our son in England who spoke to x-hotels they basically didn't want to know, they had their money and wouldn't even allow him to speak to a supervisor!!

After a night which could only be described as a worst nightmare, breathing difficulties and little sleep, the hotel duly put us in to the room which we should have had. Without the row with them the night before we would have been left in that room. It became obvious that it was were they put Americans/x-hotels bookers......perhaps they realised their mistake when they found we were English! Beware booking through x-hotels.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel President a few weeks ago. Booking our trip through Magic of Italy.

Our room was first class, with amazing views over Sorrento, The bay and across to Mount Vesuvius.
The Hotel Restaurant was very good but the menu was slightly restrictive if you dont eat fish.

Despite previous reviews we found all the staff very courteous and friendly.

Try to arrange your trips into town to coincide with the free hotel bus or book a taxi through the hotel reception. on the few occasions we used a taxi to get back to the hotel we charged between twenty and twent five Euros, which seems expensive for a five minute journey.
Hydrofoil to Capri was very cheap and ran frequently. try to avoid Capri during the weekend as it was very very busy.
We did a day trip to Rome on the train, which although Cheap was a very long journey (over three hours) but Rome was worth it.

Pompeii was very interesting and worth arranging through a travel rep so that you get a guided tour.

This was probably one of the best hotels I have stayed in Abroad. will be booking up for next year.

Amazing views and a great place to relax

by A TripAdvisor Member

My wife and I have just come back from a week honeymooning at the President and we had a fantastic time. We went for a superior sea view and were not dissapointed. From our balcony which was only a floor from the ground which I loved as I hate heights we had a view of their beautiful garden, the city of Sorrento and the Bay of Naples. Amazing does not do it justice. And it was so peaceful. Sorrento is quite noisy so we were very pleased to be in the hills when we wanted to relax. The room was spacious, the staff friendly and I really enjoyed breakfast and the three meals we ate at the hotel. The rest of the time we eat out and found that the hotel bus had enough times to make traveling to and from Sorrento and from their Capri, Amalfi and Positano not a problem. Sometimes it meant having one last beer whilst waiting for the bus to take us back to the hotel but there was a bar across the road from the pick up point so it was fine. Make sure you pay a visit to Positano, well, well worth it.
There are just a couple of negatives - the pool was not heated which stopped us from using it more and because of the distance from Sorrento you did need to plan your trips to Sorrento and elsewhere. We also suggest that if you have kids it probably isn't the best place. It would be hard to keep them entertained.
Overal just wonderful.

WONDERFUL HOTEL, FABULOUS TIME

by TripAdvisor Member globetrotters

Wow what a place!!!
I spent weeks searching for the perfect place to stay for our weekend break in Sorrento at the beginning of October 2004 and boy we weren't disappointed!!!
STUNNING, ABSOLUTELY STUNNING VIEW!!!
I booked a sea view room and selected this hotel specifically for the panoramic view.
We arrived at around mid-day and our room was ready. On entering the room it was in darkness, the shutters and black out curtains were closed. The first thing I did was go to them and open the french doors.
I was blown away - all I could do was stand there for a few minutes marvelling at the view.
Fabulous sunbathing weather and EXCELLENT service made it a weekend to remember. We were treated with the utmost courtesy at all times.
We also managed to fit in a day trip to Pompeii and as we were delayed 9 hrs on our return flight (grrrrr thomson fly from Coventry) we caught a boat to Capri and had lunch there too!
Only two slight negatives - the hotel is a long way out of town - we took the walk down into Sorrento to get the train to Pompeii, the hotel staff said it would take 15 mins - it took 40 and as I'm not really fit my calves killed me the following day!!!
Secondly, we decided to eat each evening in the hotel, service was good but the food was only average. This was our choice, we didn't feel like making the trip down the hill into Sorrento (hotel has a bus service - don't get a taxi is v.expensive) as we liked to retreat to the bar which also overlooks the bay to watch Sorrento by night which was truly beautiful.
The health & beauty suite looked nice and reasonably priced too but I didn't make it sadly - too busy lapping up the sun by the pool and enjoying that view.
If you are planning a trip to Sorrento please stay here - you'll have a wonderful time.
