More about Grand Hotel Vesuvio
This year was my fifth visit to the Grand Hotel Vesuvio in Sorrento. As everyone has already said, the views from the hotel are just breathtaking. It's a fantastic place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of Sorrento town! It's also a good base if you want to do all the sightseeing as there are plenty of things to see!
One thing I have to disagree with is the previous comment from Stevenage about the staff at the hotel. From our first visit five years ago to the current day, we have found all the staff to be extremely friendly and nothing is ever too much trouble for them. Nino the restaurant manager is a fantastic guy and has the nicest team of waiters working for him. Yes, he does flirt with the ladies, but for the most part, they enjoy it and it really is only is a facade, because he does have a serious side as well. We really look forward to seeing them every year and I am told that for many people who return on a yearly basis, they are part of the attraction.
We have always enjoyed the food at the hotel - every evening there is a different menu with plenty of choice and as somebody else has commented, they are quite happy to make you something different if there is something you don't like.
I have recommended this hotel to many friends and relatives and all came away with a positive experience.
our worst meal in Sorrento
The night we arrived, we ate in the restaurant. We ordered the vegetable platter entree (described as a variety: eggplant, peppers, zucchini) we received mashed potatoes and canned mushrooms! The wine we ordered was rancid. When we asked about it--they explained it was the way "their" wine is. Our second bottle wasn't much improved. At least they didn't charge us when we asked to take it back. During the rest of our 5 day stay we drank wine at other restaurants without any problem. The salmon was bland and tasteless. The salad bar had awful tomatoes (my corner deli has better), most everything else was canned. Needless to say we won't eat dinner there again. Breakfast was also included in our package--no surprise, all the fruit was canned.
There are free buses to take into the main center of Sorrento, however, they run hourly until 12:30pm and then the next one is at 4:30. Get there a little early especially during the busy season. People had to stand who got there on time. Also if you missed the bus, it was another hour before the next one or a 15-20 euro taxi ride down if you don't want to wait. This also happened to us at night as well.
There are local buses to take, but none at night (9:45pm). The closest bus we could get dropped us off in the middle of the hill where we walked about 250 yards uphill along the edge of the road with no real sidewalk (and two strollers) a bit nerve racking even without a stroller.
On a positive note, our 2 1/2 year old enjoyed the childrens pool immensely. The room was spacious and clean. The view was beautiful (ask for one facing the sea). Depending on who you ask directions from, the staff can be informative.
Lovely but A Little Cold
This is a lovely, grand hotel with absolutely spectacular views, spotless and comfortable rooms, a terrific swimming pool and a great poolside snack bar with the best spaghetti (neopolitan style) ever. We were so comfortable that we found it extremely difficult to leave the hotel and its grounds. Only a couple of complaints: (1) the staff was cold and not gracious, but maybe we caught them on a bad few days; and (2) the small on-site hotel shop has very few useful items and keeps hours that are sporadic, to say the least. This matters, because the hotel is outside of town and driving means taking your life in your hands. Stock up and you should be okay. Do get a room with a balcony and view--it is breathtaking.
Great Hotel for visiting Amalfi Coast
Had a wonderful weeks stay in Sept 2004.
Huge pool great view of Naples
Large rooms with balcony and view.
Minimal traffic noise because it is not in town ( in my opinion a real plus)
Shuttles give easy access to town.
Easy drive to Positano, Amalfi and Pompei.
A Very Nice Hotel
It's outside of the town of Sorrento by a few km, but that's an advantage. Quiet, clean hotel with comfortable rooms and a friendly staff, set on the side of a hill overlooking the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius. Sparcely decorated, but certainly clean and updated. Why no shower curtains? If your looking for "quaint" or "cozy" look elsewhere, but if you want a big room, a big view, and a big pool to lay by, this is a great destination.
Faultless view but....
Of course it's all about opinions and ours (my wife and I) is that this is pretty much a terrific hotel in a wonderful location. I'll try not to repeat too much of what is written further down unless I particularly disagree.
It seems there are many different types of room and we were lucky enough to have one where we could see Vesuvius through our patio-style window every morning without even lifting our heads from the pillow! We also had two tv's, a jacuzzi bath and a sofa and easy chair in our large room. From various discussions with other residents it would seem not all rooms are thus but no complaints from us and we'll never forget that view.
Our opinion of the food at the hotel is not as complimentary as some. The hotel seemed to struggle initially with the fact that we weren't on a package tour but would consider upgrading to half-board if the price was right (I was advised by a friend that the standard of food and indeed the menus varied little anywhere in Sorrento). We eventually agreed a joint price of 40 euros per night and we settled down in the vast restaurant that evening only to be particularly disappointed by the menu. We quickly changed our minds and decided on a a la carte although the waiters insisted on repeating "It's more expensive you know..!" Bless them, our room was nigh on £150 per night. A la carte was fine but we only ate in there twice during our nine night stay.
There seems to be different comments about the staff there but it was straightforward for us; they were fairly surly at reception but very friendly in the bar. The head waiter (manager?) in the restaurant was a patronising little man who insists on flattering evry woman and ignoring every man. I actually avoided eating in there (and the poolside cafe) partly because of his attitude. As my wife commented "It's not as if he's a young Al Pacino".
If I'm making it sound doom and gloom, it isn't. Wonderful views, a large, spotless rooms and large, quiet pool make this one of the best in the area (and we researched well). Don't come here if you like to be in the centre of things, it's a 15-20 minute walk into the town centre and a half hour or so uphill walk back - the shuttle bus was often full while we were there. I would also suggest that it's not for families with children that like to make a noise - undoubtedly the quietest pool I've had the pleasure of lounging around and a young lad was even berated for jumping in too loudly..!! (They didn't seem to mind the noisy (and nosey!) Italian wedding there on the Saturday though).
All in all, a terrific area and a great hotel marred only by the attitude of some of their staff.
Good Hotel with Good Service
We spent a lovely week at this hotel, staff were helpful, especially the driver of courtesy bus which was essential as we were some way from the town centre. Our bedroom had a good view of the bay of naples but we found the room a little on the small side but nicely furnished. The evening meal was good but we thought the breakfast buffet could have had a better selection. Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Vesuvio and the swimming pool area was very specious with a lovely pool.
This hotel is great!
We stayed at this hotel a couple of years ago and it was wonderful. So relaxing..wonderful grounds with beautiful lemon trees and fabulous balconies overlooking the coast. Close to the center of Sorrento (with free shuttle bus back and forth) but far enough to lose all your worries and just relax. Beautiful restaurant and very warm and helpful staff. My husband forgot his shoes when we were packing and they even overnighted them back to us at no charge. Nice comfortable rooms too.
Vesuvio great hotel
Lovely hotel with stunning views across the bay of naples. Definitely get a room with a view. It is about 2km out of Sorrento but free Shuttle Bus runs throughout the morning and again from 4.30 p.m. onwards right up to 11.00 p.m. The head waiter Nino is great and chats up all women from 15 to 70!! Franco runs a very good bar. Swimming pool very large but not heated so extremely cold. Food was very good but breakfast a little disappointing. Very basic. However we discovered if you asked for a yoghurt or fresh fruit they were very willing to oblige even though not on display. We did tours ourselves as much cheaper than the organised tours. Buses are very easy to use and ferry across to Positano and Amalfi very good. Go to the Foreigners Club and have a drink and lunch with a fantastic view. Sorrento very good with lots of nice restaurants and places to sit and have a drink. Ice creams are great. We would definitely go back to Sorrento.
