This is a really, really nice little hotel. It's a little away from the main town, but within easy walking distance of both Piazza Tasso (the main square, 5 mins) and the Circumvesuviana railway station and bus terminal (10 mins max). so you have the best of both worlds.......easy access to everything but without too much traffic noise.
The rooms are next door to the reception/breakfast area, accessible using the keycard, up a flight of stairs to the first floor (there is a lift, for which one has to pay). They are stunningly clean and very spacious, all non-smoking, with balconies to sit on. Marble floors (a bit cold in winter, bring some slippers!) and electronic wooden shutters.
Shower pressure was good, water was hot and plentiful, central heating worked well (I needed it in February), beds were a little firm (Italian beds are, I find) but comfortable. Extra blankets and pillows were provided, and there is a TV and safe in the room (and internet access too, I think).
The owners speak good English and are friendly and very helpful. Breakfast is really good, with cereals/rolls/bread/brioche/preserves etc as well as excellent pancakes and 'eggs', if you choose (I did, scrambled, and very good they were too) as well as juice/coffee/tea etc.
The only disadvantage I could think of is the lack of a fridge
Well worth staying here, I think, for convenience of access in a quieter part of town.......and for the pancakes!
Unique Quality: Friendly owners, lovely pancakes, cleanliness.
Have got to put the directions here as they are too long for the box below!
From the bus/train station follow road to the left (if you can cope with steps), then up steps on your right, right down Via Degli Aranci, cross just before the road bridge and go down the steps on the left of it. Left again to hotel (on left).
Without the steps, walk straight down to Corso Italia from bus/train station (or get off bus at Piazza Tasso), then left again to P. Tasso, left up Via Fuorimura, under the road bridge and hotel is on the left.
The first night of our trip to Italy we stayed here. The woman took a little time to be cheerful, but the guy is awesome. The rooms are adaquate, nothing special but why would you want to spend all your time in your hotel room anyway?! The breakfast was the best we had in Italy. He offers to make you pancakes and cappuccino's. Which are delicious!! We were only there for two nights but, our stay was so relaxing and wonderful and the city of Sorrento is beautiful!
Unique Quality: Great location. Can easily walk pretty much anywhere you want, with the marina being about a 5-10 minute walk. And there is a really nice restaurant like 4 minutes down the street!
Savoia was a great little hotel. It is only a 2 star but certainly does not mean it was lacking in any of the essentials. Breakfast was amazing (maybe the best we had in Italy). We got homemade pancakes which were yummmo. No maple syrup (hard to come by in Italy), so yif you ever go there, bring them some maple syrup and they will greatly appreciate it. They even told us they'll give us a free night if we bring them lots of it! The room was a decent size, with a balcony, and very quiet. It is only a 5 minute walk to the main street.
a great value in the center of sorrento. on the via fuorimura just a block from the piazza tasso. if you are looking for luxury this is not the place, but if you just want a clean affordable room for the night i highly recommend it.
This is a 2 star hotel located a few minutes walk from the main square in Sorrento.
Our standard room was basic, with a very very uncomfortable bed and a small, dark and smelly bathroom.
Unique Quality: Close by Sorrento's attractions.
Even fairly basic accommodation in Sorrento is expensive.

does anyone have a suggestion for a good, safe, cheap hotel in sorrento in july?

And mine!
The Hotel Savoia is very welcoming, extremely clean, very central, and very reasonably-priced for the area. The breakfast is particularly good (especially the pancakes!). Recommeded. Look on www.venere.com for more reviews and to book, or to explore other Sorrento options; it's a reliable site with honest reviews from guests.
We stayed twice at:
Hotel Continental
Phone (081 878 1476)
Address: Piazza Viittoria 80067
It was way more reasonable.
You are able to WALK to shops and restaurants.
Breakfast is included in the price.
The balcony has a spectacular view.

Hotel Desiree (see my tip) is also a good choice. It's got a private beach (access by elevator), breakfast is included in the price, and it's about an eight-minute walk into the city center.
I'm always pushing the Il Nido, a family run hotel away from the noise and fumes of Sorrento. It's about a 15 minute shuttle ride away - shuttles run on the half hour all morning and evening. It was the most affordable I could find when on a budget trip a couple years ago - and spotlessly clean with free internet access. The restaurant was an added bonus to come "home" to after a long day seeing the sights - delicious, home-style cooking at affordable prices.
There is no pool but if you want a quiet "nest" with outstanding views of Mount Vesuvius this is a winner.

Close by Sorrento's attractions.
