Hotel del Mare: Near to the Sea    Check Rates

  • We stayed at this hotel for 3 days/2 nights and found it to be a good place to stay. We booked a room for 3 people and we found the bedroom to be rather small. We got a double bed and a bottom half of a double-decker bunk bed. The bathroom was also small.

The reception staffs are friendly, informative and very helpful. They helped us with the bus schedules to the Amalfi coast, and also with booking of the taxi on the last day.

The hotel is close to the seaside restaurants that are located within the Marina Grande. We spent our new year's eve at a restaurant by the sea, and it was great to just stroll back to our hotel at 2.00 am. We don't have to worry about getting a bus or a taxi. The hotel is really convenient for us.

Overall, we like the hotel as it is a good place to stay.

One of the downside is that on the hotel website it states that you can request a room with a sea view, but you will not get a balcony with seaview because your balcony will face the road. You can see the sea if you go to the roof terrace. The bedroom was cleaned everyday but the towels were not changed daily. You will have to ask for fresh towels if you want it changed daily.

Breakfast is OK - fruit juices, fresh fruits, cereals, ham, cheeses, breads, toast, yogurt but no eggs; If you want coffee, ask for the espresso or cappucino - these are made fresh using the espresso machine; just DO NOT ask for caffe latte because you will get black bitter coffee from a vending machine and some cold milk. They have black tea or fruit tea, if you like.

The hotel is a little out of town, but you can easily get the bus (Line D) for 1 euro that leaves the Marina Grande every 25 minutes past the hour. If you want some exercise, you can walk up some gentle inclining steps that lead directly to the town. The walk, which takes around 10-15 minutes, is very nice; you get to see awesome view of the sea and the marina as you climb upwards.

You can buy the bus ticket (or water and other stuffs) from the small grocery market at the corner down by the Marina.

  • My companions and I spent 3 nights in this hotel which is about 10m from the beach at the Marina Grande. The 3 of us spent New Years eve on 2006 and celebrated it by watching fireworks by the water.

The hotel itself is not facing the beach so don't expect any seaview suites. We shared a triple room with a "unique" view of the next wall and paid 140 euros per night. The room was clean and small (as usual). Surprisingly, they didn't change our towels daily so we had to use the same ones throughout our stay. Breakfast was nothing to shout about, so we even gave it a miss on the second day

However, the service at the front desk was excellent. The reception gave us good information on how to get to town and other nearby popular spots.

Situated at the Marina Grande, you will either have to walk or take a bus from Sorrento central. Bus will cost 1 Euro. However, it is by the beach where you can observe fishermen bringing in their catch and there are seafood restaurants that serve the freshiest ingredients

  • Our stay was okay, but they didn't wash our towels even when when left them on the floor. They would just spread them on the bed. Also, they over-charged us on our tours when we first got there and noticed we were so tired and when we asked for a reciept they said "no you don't need" and took it away. We noticed a few minutes later and they totally denied it and printed a new reciept instead of showing the original. They are a bunch of scammers and should be shut down. They were rude and awful.

There was no pool. The sun deck was not like the picture and the location was in the ghetto and you have to walk under a covered bridge to get there... I mean its a dangerous walk to and from the hotel. It is in a bad neighborhood, very sketchy. And cars fly down that hill so if you don't get robbed in the hotel you might get mugged going to and from it and if that doesn't happen you may get run over.

  • The stay was okay, but they didn't wash our towel even when we left them on the floor.
They also noticed that we were really tired when we arrived and they told us it was best to pay for our tours right away... then the front desk person over charged us and when we asked for the reciept she said "no, you don't need" and took it away. We were so exhausted we didn't even consider that she could be scamming us, but we noticed a few minutes later that we'd been over charged by 100 euros (50 each). We told the manager and the front desk person and the girl denied and printed a new reciept in front of us and said "see I charged correct". I was shocked she literally printed a new reciept in front of us and refused to produce the original. I was horrified. Then, when we asked to leave they told us they would charge us for the room if we left anyway so we had to stay, as they had our credit card numbers.

It is in the absolutely awful part of town. It is at the bottom of a hill and it is very seedy. So if the hotel staff doesn't rob you, you may get mugged walking to and from the hotel and if that doesn't happen the cars that fly down that hill may run you over. It's a terrible hotel choice.

Hotel del Mare: Not luxurious but clean!    Check Rates

  • I don't agree with the other comments regarding Hotel del Mare or the area were it's located. The hotel is located in Marina Grande which has some real good restaurants. We followed our 2006 Rick Steves guide and tried one of the recommended restaurants. They gave us free limoncello for having the book with us. =) We walked day and night through the area in order to go to the main town. Never felt uneasy about it. The walk is not as easy, you have steps and steep streets to climb and crazy Italian drivers. Personally I welcomed the walk/climb because it kept me from gaining the waight all the wonderful food in Italy could pack on. We also liked having the two little shops by the Marina, bought some water on our way out and snacks. We just appreciated the view and enjoyed watching people, it's such a lovely town, every corner was interesting and picturesque.

Now the hotel: The outside of the hotel looks really nice, they recently remodeled the hotel so it's nice to sit in the outside patio. Our room was in the basemant floor, not the best choice but we can't complain for 100 Euros a night right? The bed was hard and the comforter was very tired looking but the room itself was decent. The bathroom is really really small, specially the shower. My husband is not big at all but had a hard time moving around. For us girls, shaving in the shower took skills. Our towels were changed every day and we were there for 3 nights. The only thing I did not like looking at in the room was in the corner, by the window, you could see mold. I know! Not very nice but I tried not to obsess with it. On a positive note, the breakfast was GREAT. Really good choices, eggs, breads, cheese, prosciutto, cereal, yogurt, fruit, fresh juice, and really rally good coffee. I loved their capuccino! We even ordered some drinks from the bar one night and got some pretzels and nuts with it. I really really can't say it was a bad experience. The service was really good and had not problems at all. One last thing...their computer sucks! So couldn't get into my email or my back account, was only able to get updates on my Phoenix Suns game.
