Sorrento
Hotels in Sorrento, like many places along the Amalfi Coast, are very expensive. We were looking for a reasonably priced hotel that wasn't in the middle of the fray and maybe slightly off the beaten path. We found the Hotel Del Mare to be just this.
The hotel is located in the Marina Grande area - the primary fishing village in the town. The lobby was well decorated and the rooms were appointed with fairly standard furniture, but the sea views had great views of Mt. Vesuvius across the bay. (What I didn't expect by the photos you see on the hotel's website is that the hotel sits on a hill slightly above several smaller apartment buildings, so while the view across the bay is beautiful, you're also looking out over the tops of other buildings - not the beach. Small detail, but good to know.)
The staff was friendly and helpful and there was a great footpath that led from the hotel directly into the heart of Sorrento with about a 10 minute walk. We only had two days here, so didn't see as much as we would have liked, but overall enjoyed Sorrento and the entire Amalfi area. Next time, we'd like to take some time to head to the island of Capri, which we've heard from many friends is gorgeous. The hotel is located in the fishing village and is very quiet at night. There is parking available for those who are driving. One thing to note - the hotel's website lists a "balcony room", which is more expensive than the other rooms. We assumed this meant that it had a sea view. It did not - but the hotel staff were very helpful in accommodating us with a sea view room - so just be aware when booking rooms.
