October Family Break

Had a Suite for four of us for 02 nights (essentially two double bedrooms with no lounge) on the hotel front overlooking Sorrento Bay and Versuvius. Wonderful views and hotel was reasonable value for money. We were on a B&B basis but most residents seem to be middle-aged plus Brits all staying on half board. Standard of rooms was ok, good three star UK standard and they were clean. Bar and private pool service was excellent as was the very useful fact that the hotel had on-site car-parking, very useful in the narrow streets of Sorrento! Views from the small Balconies were stupendous...Breakfast was good although dinner was definitely 70's and tuned to the English pensioner palate!! There is a great family restaurant virtually opposite the hotel and I would recommend that one instead.
Downside:
Was some noise on the Thurs eve as all the local teenagers seemed to congregate outside the front of the hotel. Hotel advertises it has a PRIVATE BEACH but this is not the case. They have an agreement with the individual who 'own;s that stretch of beach and he wouldn;t let us on in Oct. which was v annoying as half the reason we went to the hotel in the first place!!

Overall though a pleasant stay although not for twenty-somethings I would suggest!!

Travel in and out of Sorrento by car is very busy at rush hours with long queues so be prepared for some delays...

Unique Quality: Views
Lovely private pool - not heated
Private beach SUMMER ONLY!!
On site Car-parking
Very limited Balcony for Breakfast...three tables for 02 pax!!

Mediterraneo

Hotel Mediterraneo is located in Sant'Agnello di Sorrento, a 15/20 min. (flat) walk to downtown Sorrento. The location is lovely: high on a cliff overlooking the Bay of Sorrento. The hotel is at the border of the sea ... well, at about 140 steps! BUT there's an elevator in the hotel that brings you right on the (black sandy) small beach.

The hotel has rooms overlooking the Bay. These rooms are facing the street and during the day there is quite some traffic. That's why we chose to have a room facing the pool/garden.

The staff is very professional and extremely helpful.

The hotel restaurant 'Vesuvio' is located on the top floor and has a magnificent panoramic view on the Bay. It has also a small terrace where guests can have their breakfast in the morning. Lovely!

Unique Quality: The hotel has recently been refurbished. It has all modern amenities like double glazed windows, sat-TV, direct dial phone, minisafe, minibar, A/C, ... The Mediterraneo being an old building the walls are thin. In case you're a bad sleeper, bring ear plugs!

The rooms as well as the bar, salon and restaurant are nicely decorated, in light blue and off-white/beige. Even the china is off-white with light blue!

The garden is a great place to relax, either by the pool or on the lovely garden terrace amidst the lemon/orange trees or under the palmtrees. Here's where you can have a drink or enjoy lunch (their home made pizza, baked in an authentic wood oven is to die for!). On some nights there's live Napolitan music in the garden.

Food:
Breakfast is buffet style with a variety of rolls, bread and pastry. Furthermore fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals, cheese & cold meats, eggs, bacon, ...
Dinner is served at the table with a daily changing menu (to choose from 5 starters, 5 mains and 5 desserts). The food was of excellent quality. The restaurant has also an extensive wine list.

Two weeks in Sorrento

We stayed in the Mediterraneo in September 2000; a superb hotel, just 1.5km out of the town centre in S'Agnello. Great pool with bar/lunch service. Dining room on 5th floor overlooked the Bay of Naples. Waiter service/buffet. Our room overlooked the pool and the hills behind Sorrento. Staff helpful and courteous. Half hour walk into Sorrento or 5 minutes on the bus which stops outside hotel. Train station nearby for trips to Pompeii and Naples. Other trips easily arranged to Capri or Amalfi coast (diy or tour)
Biggest mistake was the Rome trip as coach journey was 4 hours +, barely enough time to visit the Sistine chapel, before the 4 hour trip back. Sorrento and hotel highly recommended.

Word of Caution

by TripAdvisor Member D.C.Lola

I am not able to tell you anything about this hotel, because they abruptly canceled our reservations!! I booked, and paid for, this hotel 2 months ago because of the fabulous reviews. However, I was just notified by Expedia, our booking agent, that the hotel had just faxed them to notify us that they were 'sold out' and 'would not honor our reservations'. We paid for this hotel 2 months ago and had confirmations in hand! We'd planned a vacation around our time in Sorrento! Thankfully, the Expedia agent we dealt with was extremely helpful and transferred our reservations to a property that appreciates it's guests. The lesson: Confirm, re-confirm, and confirm again!!

Friendly staff and good service at the Mediterraneo

Have just returned from a short break to the Mediterraneo and would definitely return. I found the staff to be very friendly and professional. The reception staff sent very helpful replies to my email queries in advance of the trip and helped to organise excursions and transfers to the airport. The free minibus to Sorrento was also good. Lovely decor in the hotel, beautiful views over to Ischia and Vesuvius across the bay and friendly staff made this a trip I hope to repeat in the future.

Highly recommended!

Lovely hotel in a good location - quiet and yet close enough to downtown Sorrento, either a 15/20 min. walk (flat), the free hotel shuttle or the Circumvesuviana bus that stops in front of the hotel.
Very professional and friendly staff.
Nice rooms with all modern facilities. Only minor point IMO is the thin walls, so if you are a light sleeper: bring earplugs!
Lush garden with citrus trees, palm trees, bushes and flowers with a great pool (towels free of charge). Also a nice garden terrace to enjoy a drink, or lunch (their homemade pizza's baked in an authentic wood oven are DELICIOUS!), or live music sometimes.
Excellent food in the top-floor restaurant 'Vesuvio' with a different menu every night (choice from various first courses, main courses and desserts).
We had a great stay in the Mediterraneo and highly recommend this hotel.

We couldn't have asked for a better experience. It is a BEAUTIFUL hotel. Located right off the Gulf. The rooms with a balcony and a view are Amazing!! It is very romantic! Has a private beach overlooking crystal blue waters. The rooms were very nice and clean. The staff was by far the best we had after spending several weeks travelling throughout Italy. It is a MUST!

Wonderful views, helpful staff, great location

by TripAdvisor Member woobalina

We had a wonderful week in October. The room was lovely, with a view over the bay of Naples and Vesuvius. The staff could not have been more helpful or friendly. The free minibus to the town centre was great, but it would have been nice if it had run a bit later in the evening. Breakfast on the balcony, overlooking the Bay of Naples was breathtaking. The location of the hotel meant it was quiet, and the bus stopped regularly outside the entrance, so getting around on the public transport was easy and cheap. We hired a car and it was a big mistake as the roads/drivers are so dangerous. We would certainly recommend the hotel highly, and will definitely return.

Exquisite Hotel on the Amalfi Coast

I took my husband to the Hotel Mediterraneo for his 50th birthday (he had graduated from High School in Naples). Could not have picked a more romantic hotel/location. Management was wonderful--arranged a happy birthday basket with wines/cheeses/pastries/breads and a beautiful flower arrangement in the room when we arrived. The staff was courteous, responsive, could not do enough for us during our stay. Awesome panoramic view of the Bay of Naples and Mt Vesuvius. Excellent food. Excellent service. One of the best vacations we have had in Europe.

Well worth a visit
