catania central station to circumvesuviana station sorrento

by vincentbuhagiarooooo

Hi everyone,
Can someone help me out and tell me if there is a train from catania central station strait to circumvesuviana - Sorrento station, and how much it cost please.
Thank you in advance

The simple answer is "No", because Catania is served by the national rail system (Trenitalia or Ferrovie dello Stato) and the Circumvesuviana station in Sorrento is served by - surprise! - the Circumvesuviana rail company.

Generally, you would take the Trenitalia train up to Naples, then go downstairs to the Circumvesuviana station to take the hour long ride out to Sorrento.

The cost for Catania to Naples depends on which train you take - the cost varies with types of train, speeds, and services (couchettes, etc - this is a long trip by train). I don't remember what the cost is for the Naples to Sorrento run, but it can't be much - I am sure someone will answer presently.

Please look at www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html and enter "Catania" and "Naples" for a date next week and see the kinds of solutions you get: day/night, direct/connections, etc.

I just want to clarify, in case I misunderstood the intent of your question...can you get from Catania to Sorrento by train? Yes, through Naples. Can you do it on a single train? No, you not only have to change trains in Naples, you have to change train companies...but the stations are right next to each other...OK?

In February, the return trip to Naples from Sorrento for two people was Euros 13.20. That was on a Friday. the following Sunday the same trip, same number of people, the fare was Euros 10.40. So I hsould imagine a single trip for one would be slightly more than a quarter of those prices, depending on which day you travel.

Travel Tips for Sorrento

Spend a day taking pictures

by Callistoe

I spent one whole day in Sorrento just taking pictures. I am a photographer by heart, and it is what I love to do. I rented a scooter and cruised up and down random streets, and wandered onto some Hotel grounds...there are no words in the English language that can accurately describe how beautiful Sorrento really is, I hope that my photos can help express what voice cannot...

Train

by GUYON

The Circumvesuviana is the railway which goes from Sorrento to Naples.
It is not a part of the Italian transport authority (FS).
There is a train each half an hour and the ride to Naples lasts 1 hours excepted if the train is semi-direct : 50 min.
The ticket costs around 5 euros. It is certainly the best way to go to Naples or to Pompei.

Take a stroll in the centro

The very centre of Sorrento is no doubt Piazza Tasso. Be it day or night, there's always something to see on Piazza Tasso. This is the centre of local cultural traditions like carnival, Easter processions, and summer and autumn festivals with typical products.
On this square you will find the Chiesa del Carmine and the Palazzo Correale.

Marina Grande

by toonsarah

This was our favourite spot in Sorrento. Here, away from the traffic of the streets above, you can fancy yourself in a small fishing village. It’s a great place for keen photographers, with loads of local colour – fishermen passing the time of day or mending their nets, locals hanging out their washing from windows on the steep hillside, cats basking in the sun, and occasionally a boat heading out to sea. It’s all a little scruffy, but much more appealing for that.

To get here you follow Via Marina Grande down from the Piazza della Vittoria, turning right down a flight of stone steps through the ancient Greek gateway to the harbour. Once through here the view opens up and you see the harbour below. A few more steps, a few more minutes, and you’re down by the water’s edge. You can turn right to walk out on the jetty where the fishermen linger, or left to follow the bay round to the pretty church and a succession of unassuming restaurants and cafés – see my Restaurant tip.

Beautiful Sorrento

by BorneoGrrl

"Coastal city in South Italy"

Sorrento is a beautiful coastal little city that is situated southwest of Italy and is close to Naples & Pompeii. It overlooks the bay of Naples and has wonderful views of the Mediterranean sea and Mt Vesuvius (thankfully which was quiet when I was there)

It is not difficult to get a great view in or from Sorrento, and the weather is usually great. I was there during winter and the temperature was around 10-15 C! Other popular destinations e.g Amalfi, Positano & Capri are close by and are easily accesible by bus or ferry. Seafood is also in abundant, so are the lemon & orange trees you see everywhere, even lined on the streets!

With fantastic views & weather, no wonder Sorrento is favorite destinations with Italians & foreigners alike
