Modern Pompei
by malkin
If you have a little time to spend when you go to the Pompeii ruins try to go a few hundred metres along the road into the modern Pompei. It’s a pleasant town where the hoards of tourists don’t seem to get to. You can eat your sandwiches or whatever in peace in the town square with the refreshing sound of the fountain to help the digestion

We chose this restaurant in which to have our wedding breakfast it was perfect.
The food was gorgeous and the staff were so helpful - they opened the restaurant just for my husband and I when we went to view it.
The outside gardens are just beautiful, a really romantic place.
Also reasonably priced. I had the fillet steak it was the best ever!
Inlaid Woodwork and Italian Handicrafts Galore
by Krystynn
Shopaholics - hear ye! Head straight to VIA SAN CESAREO for some superb Italian crafts and local specialities. To destress later (when you realized to your utter horror that you had busted your credit limit on your credit cards), you may wish to enjoy a sightseeing tour in a horse drawn carrozza.
We joined a half day city tour (on our 2nd visit in 2002) which brought us to PIAZZA TASO, the town square where you can find a number of shops selling embroidered goods and intarsia (wood inlay) work, both popular items from this region. The tradition of inlay woodwork in Sorrento dates back many centuries and is characterized by its lacy design sometimes used in furniture.

The older men of the town meet here to hang out and play cards to pass the time. What an extraordinary place to use for hanging around all day. The domed painted ceilings are incredible. We never did figure out what the structure was built for originally. It's nice that it is visited and appreciated daily, even if the original intent isn't being met anymore. Oh, to have such architecture to treat so cavalierly.
Sorrento

"Saint Agnello"
We stayed a 15-20 min walk outside Sorrento in a small town called Saint Agnello. This was a lovely place with a small square in the centre and a couple of nice bars, we usually went to Tony's and The Wine Cellar which was a funky wee place with millions of bottles of wines on shelves on every wall you looked at. Wine lovers paradise.
The walk into Sorrento isnt for the faint hearted - its along a very busy road with the mad drivers in their cars and especially the mad scooters. If they cant get by on the road they will just mount the pavement to pass the traffic. Not too bad for us but I can see why some people would not be happy about this. Our hotel laid on a courtesy shuttle and you could take the public bus for 1 euro so you actually dont need to walk the road if you dont want to.
"Grand Parco Del Sole"
This was our 4 star hotel and it was lovely. We were on a half board basis and although the breakfasts werent really for me the food was very good. We did eat out a few times though as I felt that there was no way you could go to Italy and eat in your hotel all week. The staff were very friendly and the service was without fault. The hotel itself is nice, set back from the road up an impressive driveway with a fountain at the top. There was a main pool with a small jacuzzi stlye pool beside it. Not loads of sunloungers but we did always manage to get one whatever time of the day we went to the pool.
"Sorrento"
The shopping in Sorrento is good with the maze of cobbled streets being a shoppers paradise. i would have loved to have brought home a bunch of chillies - they looked great. 'Lemoncella' is the local drink with loads of places selling it - we got ours at 'The Pink Elephant' after being given a shot of Ameretto, Lemoncello and Lemoncello Cream to try. Jewellery is also a good buy - whether you need it or not. You still have to listen out for the beeping horns of the scooters in these streets but its not nearly as bad as the main streets.
Also in these streets are loads of lovely restaurants - far too many to try to sample them all, but they all looked fantastic and no one pressures you to come in. The staff are always there but if you want to come in great if not then thanks anyway - much nicer than being herded in as soon as you look in their direction.
