Siesta
At midday the streets of Sorrento become much quieter than usual, as tourists escape to the beach, and locals take their Siesta. This can be a good time to explore the town - if you can handle the heat.

We are traveling in September, 2009 and would like to take the Marozzi bus line from Rome to Sorrento on Monday, Sept. 14 and back to Rome on Friday, Sept. 18. The problem is the Marozzi website is in Italian and I don't read Italian. Is there an Italian speaker out there who would be kind enough to look it up and translate the schedule for me? I believe the address is www.marozzivt.it/ Many thanks!
This is what the website says:
Sept. 14
bus #1
07:00 a.m. - depart Autostazione Tiburtina [Rome]
10:45 a.m. - arrive Stazione Circumvesuviana [Sorrento]
bus #2
03:00 p.m. - depart Autostazione Tiburtina [Rome]
07:00 p.m. - arrive Stazione Circumvesuviana [Sorrento]
note: 'autostazione Tiburtina' is the bus depot next to Roma Tiburtina, the train station on the east side of Rome. It has a Metro stop, and while not in the historic center, is still relatively easy to get to.
note: 'Stazione Circumvesuviana' is the Circumvesuviana train station in Sorrento. The Circumvesuviana is a private railroad that has a lot of track in the Naples area (the national railroad doesn't run to Sorrento, for example, only the Circumvesuviana). As the only railroad station in town, either you can walk to the city center (or you're in it), or there is municipal bus service. I obviously haven't done that (I went by private bus), but I am sure there are many here who have.

As you can see, this is one of the reasons that people talk about the train so much. Yes, there are buses, but between big destinations, the trains run more often. In the case of Rome to Sorrento, you would generally leave Rome Termini (not Tiburtina, although it's possible) on a slow to a very fast train (and lots inbetween), then switch to the Circumvesuviana in Naples by walking downstairs to the other station. It's not that the train is faster (although you can make it fast by paying a lot of money for Rome to Naples sprint), it's that there are rail solutions all day long, not just twice a day like the bus...but if the bus works for you...go for it!

If you are looking for means of transport along the Amalfi coast (Salerno, Sorrento) this website helps you to choose between ferry and bus.

For train connections see the Circumvesuviana website which gives information about travelling from/to Napels.

Pizzeria Aurora is centrally located in Piazza Tasso, and serves fifty varieties of award-winning pizzas! I had a vegetarian pizza with tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and mozzarella cheese. It was definitely worth of an award! The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, with longer opening times than others in the area. Don't buy an overpriced dessert- grab some gelato at the nearby Gelateria Davide instead.
It's easy to get to Herculaneum from Sorrento via the local 'Circumvesuviana' train service to the modern town of Ercolano. It's a 10 minute walk from the station down to the excavations.
Far less of Herculaneum has been excavated than Pompeii. It is estimated that the overall area enclosed by the walls was 20 hectares, of which only 4.5 are open.
It was buried in volcanic mud, rather than the ash which covered Pompeii (likened to rice crispies by our guide) which has led to the preservation of organic artifacts (fabrics, furniture and the structural parts of wooden buildings, including upper floors).
Make sure you have a bottle of water and a hat if visiting in the summer - it gets very hot.
arriving in naples was a little unnerving as I had been watching the news while in rome and seeing riots happening and problems with rubbish collection luckily I met a very nice gentleman who escorted me from the train and showed me to where I could catch the circumvesuviana train. the ticket to sorrento only cost about $5/6 AUD and it took about an hour to travel from naples to sorrento.
I got off the train in st agnello 1 stop before sorrento and walked to my bed and breakfast "mami camilla"
