Traditional Processions

by Pawtuxet

On this day, Sorrento celebrated St. Anthony. Each church dressed in its own colors and costume, carrying their crucifix and other symbols. This tradition of parading the streets on religious holidays has been all but lost in the U.S. We see it in one or two of our neighborhoods in RI and of course in the streets of NYC, but it is rare nowadays. Such a celebration enriches your visit to such little towns.
This is the sort of cultural event or scene which I search for when I travel. It tells me so much more about the place and its people than to look at a statue.

Travel Tips for Sorrento

Sorrento

by richstreet

Horse and carriage, a nice relaxing way to see the town. Look out for locals on scooters, we saw one carrying two adults, one child and a dog. ....... and before anyone asks ...... no the dog was not driving.

Capri

by malkin

And of course Capri . . . well, Capri has such a reputation thanks to Axel Munthe , Gracie Fields and others that you might just want to go there. If you don’t I’m not sure that you’ll miss much that the Amalfi coast can’t give you - except the boat trip

SCENIC SORRENTO

by travelgourmet

"TOURIST HEAVEN"

Sorrento sits on the Bay of Naples and the sight of the city from the road coming from Naples is spectacular. Cliffside villas, the port, and the lemon trees in the distance make an inviting beacon for the tourist. The center of town is the Piazza Tasso with many smaller streets off the main artery road.

Via San Cesareo is the street of shops for the tourist with many items to choose from, including Sorrento's famous products: Inlaid wood (Marquetry) and Limoncello (lemon liquor) to have that keepsake of Sorrento, well, maybe not the Limoncello. Hard to keep something that tastes so good and goes down so well. The port area is the taking off spot by Ferry to the Island of Capri and the Amalfi Coast towns of Positano and Amalfi.
