A very good hotel close train station is Hotel Guercino (www.guercino.it), clean, nice and not really expensive. I enjoyed my staying there. On Booking reservation site (www.booking.com) you could find some good offers for this or other hotels close the University, looking at maps and reading guests rewiews. I suggest you to take a train from Milan or Rome (distance and prices are about the same), because is less expensive respect a plane: you can check prices and timetable on the railway site (www.trenitalia.it/en/index.html). Anyway, if you prefer to come by plane, from Marconi airport there's the aerobus wich can take you right to main train station in 10/15 minutes (from Forlì airport there's a Ryanair bus wich can take you there). Then take the bus C or the lines 33/36 to reach the University (situated in Via Zamboni 33).
Bologna is a students town and is quite safe, but is always better to be prudent (as in all the big cities), particularly at night. The city centre and the University area are full of pubs and locals where drinking and listening music, one address for all is the Art Music Bar Wolf (www.bar-wolf.it), wich offers live music every day.
