Florence might be better, between Bologna and Florence could be not to much interesting.

p.s. both inside Bologna and Florence you could not use your own or rent car if you don't live inside the area (not the whole city) where you would go by car.

Thanks
We have decided to go to Florence and pick up hire car from there. Will be driving to Rome via Tuscany & Umbria - planning to spend two nights near Paciano or Panicale. Then into Rome for 3 nights, then onto Amalfi for 5 nights.

Then from florence to Rome via car, some of the highlights that I enjoy would be Siena, Pienza, Montepulciano, and the must see along here is Orviet, right at the 1/2 way point. Don't miss it, if only for the facade of the duomo.

ciao

Travel Tips for Bologna

Arte muralis

by croisbeauty

This are nice piece of work and look very atractive. The first graphite is painted on the front facade of an house which is under major reconstruction works and it will probably disappeared in a while. To bad because it is nice piece of work and funny. The other one is painted on a wall in porticoe which is situated right opposite to the main entrance of the university (Universita degli studi).

good value for money

by Gillianina about Osteria dell'orsa

Cosy osteria where to eat very good food and drinks at a good price. They serve many snacks, and pasta (every day they change) and also seconde courses, like meat, vegetable, and so on. Have a piadina and red wine, or a good beer. Very nice is the "piatto dell'amicizia" ("friendship dish"), a huge plate with half kilo pasta to eat with friends :)

Good Indian restaurant

by BlueLlama about Taj Mahal

Bologna boasts a number of Indian restaurants and, while I can't speak for the others, this one is pretty good. The dining room is quite dark (I seem to remember there were no windows), but decorated nicely enough with the usual wall hangings.

Food was tasty and portions good. There's a very good range of choices for vegetarians, something that can't be taken for granted in Italy, even in (sometimes especially in) non-Italian restaurants. The cuisine is very much classic Indian restaurant food - nothing original for those that eat Indian food regularly - but it is done well. There is also a takeaway service.

Well worth going for vegetarians and for anyone who wants a rest from Italian food. Vegetarian dishes are plentiful, although the bulk of the menu is meat-based. I liked the sabzi kofta.

Two Towers

by ozalp

There are two towers in Bologna. They are huge and worth to be pictured. When I was taking photos, I realized that it is not vertical. You can see the angle between two towers in the main photo.

I don't know if it was possible to climb these towers. But it could be nice to do it.

Return to San Petronius, (but...

by ChrsStrl

Return to San Petronius, (but when we were there the best cycle of frescoes is behind a heavy marble screen and was difficult to see).

Much of the interior is taken up by scaffolding, being noisily dismantled.

We then go to Tamborini, the restaurant/ delicatessen where we are to lunch. The exhibition of tortellini making has already begun. The art of making such delicate little ones seems to be very fussy for something so soon eaten.
