fog in October in Emilia Romagna

by emiller44444

We will be visiting Emilia Romagna in mid-October. We were considering renting a car but we have been warned that time of year has frequent heavy fog that makes driving on unfamiliar roads dangerous. I would appreciate hearing advice from travelers and residents.

I am not sure about the name of region,,, Italy,, but I confirm that the region leading from Forli to Venice and Trieste is foggy, really, around Sept-Oct.

I wasl lost in misty weather for hours. Take care.

What you have heard is true.
The plain of the Po river---the Pianura Padana-- can be like driving through a huge bottle of milk, due to cold dry air rolling out of the Alps and colliding with warm moist air on the plain. The fog can hang around for days at a time.
You leave the fog behind as soon as you gain some altitude.

As a "pianura Padana" inhabitant, No, sept-oct isn't the worst fogs risk.
And even in a foggy day, the hard times are up to 10-11 am and after 8 pm...
Higways maybe be dangerous with heavy fog (always some kamikaze driving at full speed nearly in the blind), but or regular (and slow) roads the risks aren't that much.... The worst is that can be hard to say where you are, and to find the road you are looking for... A sat nav would help to relax a lot on thta matetr.
Ciao
Francesco

I really appreciate all the help. I get the impression that the fog tends to burn off by 11am but, unfortunately, we were planning day trips from Bologna. Waiting until 11am each day to leave Bologna would mean that we would arrive in places like Ravenna, Parma, Ferrara, Modena etc just as many of the tourist sites and the shops would be closing for 3 hours. Do most mornings start out with serious fog in October? If there is no fog early in the morning, can the fog suddenly appear later? I am very worried about starting out on the highway when it is fairly clear and suddenly not being able to see enough to even get off the road. Are the smaller roads safer because they are less foggy or because the speed is not as great. Thank you so much for the knowledgeable help - we are trying not to cancel our plans.

There's no reason to cancel your plans. The trains are fine.

Travel Tips for Bologna

Museums everywhere

by croisbeauty

The whole central part of the town looks like an big open space museum and virtually every building in it deserves your attention. Great many of building are constructed by the red coloured bricks which makes the old core very pitoresque. For such an, relatively small town, Bologna has great number of museums and you'll met them all around.

eating and wine drinking (do not go there!)

by Gillianina about Contavalli

Once a very good place to have a typical "piadina" and good wine, now it has got much worse. Piadinas are not good anymore, french fries suck, and pasta dishes are frozen. ALso cocktails are really bad. AVOID GOING THERE!!

Beware the pigeons!

by Tijavi about Rosa Rosa Bistrot

No I didn't have any pigeons here, nor there is one in the menu. I am talking about droppings from pigeons. While enjoying my crispy chicken (hmmm, now thinking if it was chicken, indeed) with couscous (a welcome diversion from Italian cuisine) with pinot bianco (delicious!), some naughty pigeon released a generous amount of its droppings right unto my helpless backpack (what a worse disaster it could have been if it veered a few inches directly to my head or the crispy chicken). One of the staff was very helpful as she cleaned the bag herself.

On to the food...the crispy chicken was well, crispy, and the couscous was as good a side dish as it could be. So was the cream of mascaporne and coffee. But I must say the pinot bianco was the highlight of the meal.

As for the pigeon, I like it stuffed Chinese style - with plum sauce, please.

Typical Onion of Medicina Emilia Romagna Pear (IGP) , Coppe di testa (sliced neck of pork) Zampone (stuffed pig's trotter)

Palazzo Comunale 2

by croisbeauty

The part of the Palace that ovelooks Piazza del Nettuno is covered with tablets in memory of those who died while defending the town. Palazzo Comunale is very huge building which occupies large space, the side that overlooks via Ugo Bassi is turned into the museum. It is where a beautiful fountain "Fontana Vecchia" is located, work of Tommaso Laureati from 1565.
