Average hotel for a reasonable price

We stayed at Hotel Maxim for only one night, though one could almost say that we stayed for two. We had taken a night train to Bologna and arrived very early at the hotel. The staff was kind to us as they waited for a room to become available (they had been fully booked during the night), and even offered us a free breakfast. They had a room ready for us at 9:30am, so we even got a quick catnap in our room before starting our day of sightseeing. This gracious service greatly improved my opinion of the hotel.

The double room is a two-level arrangement--a sitting area with TV and a daybed downstairs, and upstairs a loft with the master bed and another TV. While this setup gave the room a feel of spaciousness, they did not install enough lights and this meant that some heavy shadows were cast on the lower level in the evening. As a result, the room would often feel unpleasantly dark after sunset. The bathroom was modern, but the shower was very cramped and some of the towels were paper-thin.

The breakfast was all pastries and sweetbreads, which were tasty but meant you had a breakfast without substance. We had trouble with the wireless connection in the lobby; it only seemed to work with our Mac and not let our PC log in.

The location was convenient enough, with a short (10-15 mins) bus ride to the train station and center of the city. The bus runs frequently making travel easy.
